DTT transmissions commence on 31st October this year and will cover about 90% of the population. We recommend that viewers only purchase approved boxes to ensure that they work under all conditions. Walker is the only manufacturer with approved receivers one of which is the WP10DTB.

I trust this addresses your query.

    Kind Regards,
    Ray Maguire

Even though Ray Maguire says it starts on the 31st Oct to 90% of the population and the Order requires it by the 31st, this date falls on a weekend and a Sunday. (stock answer from RTÉ I'd guess, they did say in July it would be available to 94.5% of the pop.)

Most likely before or after this date we'll have an announcement from RTÉ stating that the service is now available from a certain number of transmitters. I don't expect any fireworks other than an interruption free service that develops over the months ahead to the full national launch probably in Q2 next year.

Probably between now and the full launch next year I would guess as viewers and retailers become aware of the service.

Likely all the usual brand names. Any DVB-T MPEG4 HD box for mainland Europe basically just needs MHEG5 added. UK DVB-T2 Freeview HD should be OK and only need minor tweak to get a Saorview logo.

The list here (still AWOL on 1st October 2010). Overview of specs here (and pdfs)
How much will a Set Top Box cost?
Approved STBs will be available prior to the launch of the DTT services. The price of these has yet to be determined.
Please note that no STB's (set top boxes) or iDTV's (Integrated Digital Televisions) have been approved for the Irish market as yet. When approved STB's or iDTV's are available in the Irish market, information will be provided on this website. Link to www.digitaltelevision.ie

    Analogue switch off

Analogue switch off in ireland is scheduled for end 2012.

    RTÉ Free-to-Air DTT Receiver

NorDig Unified ver 2.0. equipment requirements (pdf)

    Minimum Receiver Requirements (pdf)

“Approved Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) Receivers

RTÉ has appointed Teracom AB to conduct receiver compliance testing for Irish free-to-air (FTA) DTT receivers. Those receivers which pass the tests thereby meeting the Irish DTT specification will be eligible to be licensed to use RTÉ’s “Saorview” logo, which will confirm to consumers that the receiver is Irish FTA DTT compliant. RTÉNL will publish a full list of compliant DTT receivers on its web site.

Manufacturers/distributors wishing to use the Saorview logo should contact Teracom (irdtest@teracom.se) to arrange testing. When a receiver passes the tests, it will then be eligible to be licensed by RTÉ to carry the Saorview logo.”

:( Ok, 30 days to go. We know we won't see TV3 or 3e until next year at the earliest, but at this stage, why aren't we seeing tests for RTE1+1, Euronews and RTE Childrens or at least activated channels with test cards for these channels, which were announced by RTE as part of the public service mux, when they had that gathering with the Dail committee during the summer ?
Is 31st October just going to be a damp squid, with nothing more than what we have now on DTT ?

Could be they just add RTE1+1, Euronews and RTE Childrens on 1st Nov. Why bother any earlier...
Or could be those are added some time between 31st October 2010 and when ever the Public Launch date is. Don't forget there is only a "use by" Launch Date, no actual date agreed yet.

My bet is the Publicity starts to ramp up from 1st November 2010

How many TV channels will we end up with? The 6 that we have now or more?

    Published many times...
If you want lots get a dish with Freesat receiver, Once off Cost.
We only have 3.7 real Irish TV channels currently on Analogue.

DTT is just a digital replacement of Analogue which closes in 2012

Don't expect to see all this happen overnight on 31st October 2010. It's a process.

Proposed content 2010 ... 2011 until 2nd Multiplex doubles capacity.

    Television

    RTÉ One
RTÉ Two (HD part time, typically on Sport )
    TV3
    TG4
    RTÉ News Now
    Children / RTÉ 1 +1 / Euronews (time share)
3e (currently Cable & Satellite Pay TV only)
    RTÉ Digital Teletext

    Radio
(all existing RTE radio from VHF-FM, LW 252 and DAB)

    RTÉ Radio 1
    RTÉ Radio 1 Extra
    RTÉ 2 FM
    RTÉ RnaG
    RTÉ Lyric FM
    RTÉ Choice
    RTÉ Gold
    RTÉ Junior/RTÉ Chill
    RTÉ Pulse/RTÉ 2xm

In late 2011 to Early 2012 additionally when the 2nd Multiplex is running:

RTÉ One: Change to HD only
RTÉ Two: Change to HD only
TV3 Change to HD 2012 to 2013 sometime.
    TG4 Change to HD

Added after 2nd MUX is running:
