Coming off a great midweek win against twente we need to come in with the same attitude... cant have another game like wigan were our performance drops remarkably because of a "Champions League hangover"

unlikely king will start and with bassong our only fit centre half would like to see this team out ( bar a messed up C.B two )

    Gomes
    Hutton--Corluka--Bassong--Thudd---
    Lennon--Thudd--Modric--Bale
    VDV
    Pav

Hopefully lennon gets some confidence back and i still believe pav is our best fit striker ( or at least can show the most talent ) hopefully he takes in some confidence after scoring 2 goals from wednesday. . .

I see a big group of lads are heading over this saturday , wish i was going...
Enjoy the game an try not to be late after being in the Bill Nic ;)

    COYS!

Oh Christ I hope for our sake that Charlie isnt starting CB. Was terrible there against WHU. Provided King dosen't play I'd much rather see Hudd playing back there.

    Gomes
    Hutton --- Hudd --- Bassong --- BAE
    Van D V --- Modric --- Palacios --- Jenas --- Bale
    Crouch

Cant see Pav starting after the Twente match, didn't do very much barr the peno's. Perhaps Sandro might make his PL debut in place of Palacios/Jenas??

I can't see much changes from the team that played midweek tbh. There is an international break comming up and Ledley can rest then. I would like to see Lennon back in and VDV moved up top with Crouchie instead of Pav.

+1...VDV looks like he can play anywhere and we need a lively striker

What a signing this VdV lad is proving already, adding much needed desire to the midfield. Reckon Harry has the formation wrong in these type of games, giving too much room to the visitors in the middle of the park. Need to kick on in the second half.

    VDV is the f*cking man.

That wasn't smart by Bale. Only 4 secs left in the game like.

My internet cut out and when i fixed it I noticed Sandro was playing and then he blew up for full time was he on long I missed from when Collins took out Lennon so have no idea?

    Great win thoroughly deserved

Great win, hope this is a turning point considering some of our other results in the league. What can ye say about Rafa? Class act, i can see him getting a bagfull of goals this season, nice to see Lennon starting to get a bit of form and i hope this continues for him.

VDV is an absolute hero... i was at this fixture last year and it was the same old boring 10 men behind the ball hit you on the counter villa... could rafael be the touch of class we need to finish the teams we should be beating. His dummy for the second was majestic :D

Collins should have gone for that tackle on lennon for sure imo.

Bale getting a yellow is a fat -1 on my fantasy points tally... horrid.

    Overall great 3 points :)

I forgot about that Lennon was excellent when he came on credit where it's due wether he needed a rest after his injury or a kick in the arse the couple of Matches on the Bench did a world of good

Assou-Ekotto was also very good I forgot to mention :)
Only real fault through the whole game was when Bassong was alone with Heskey there he tried to out muscle him instead of kicking it out.

Looks like vdv is the Lampard/Gerrard style scoring midfielder we've been lacking. Things could be more promising with him in our team now!

to think that we paid the same 8m for Corluka as we did VDV , What a signing VDV is , world class.

very important win today and deserved in fairness. vdv is starting to hit the back of the net and will be such a top class player for us. he is a hero already.

we do look a lot more asssured with gomes in goal, he seems to control the centre backs a lot better. bassong made a mistake when out muscled by heskey but was good for the rest of the game. ekotto was excellent i though, a very good game for him

couple of the lads looked tired , modric etc but they have a two week break now. pav was doing alright i thought and was unlucky to be taken off but lennon defo gave us more width and balance on the right. he put a few stray passes but did better then recently. rest of the team did well, crouch won a good few headers and played people in etc

hutton is so much better than corluka at present, yes his defending is not the best but he is excellent going forward so i cant see charlie getting back in.

onwards and upwards. 5th place and an excellent start to the champs league. mighty!!

Only thing is down the line we HAVE to make up for the points we dropped against West Ham and Wigan.

So gotta pick up a result against the likes of united away and games we usually could lice with loosing.

We need to turn away draws against everton and villa into wins and beat wolves too

VDV was excellent today. He has created a fantastic buzz about the place, a little like when Klinsmann first came to the lane. Dont know about his GILF fetish though :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 541 ✭✭✭WHL

Not long back from the game. It was a real ding-dong game. Both halves seemed to fly which is a good indicator. VDV was obviously outstanding. Thought that Hudd did fine at centre-back and Bassong was really good - except of course for their goal. Modric was quiet and Bale was not as busy as usual. Crouch did really well - he is starting to grow on me (just drives me mad as a traditionalist when Dawson and Crouch are on the same team and Daws just hoofs it up to him). I thought that Lennon blew hot and cold - some great moves but some not so good - it will take a while yet before he is back to his best but we do miss the width when he is not playing

On a final note, isn't the slow version of The Spurs Go Marching In outstanding. Makes us different to all of the rest - until they start copying it...

@WHL or anyone that was there was Villa's tackling as bad as it looked on tv? I thought they got away with murder especially in the first half but nobody else has mentioned it so I figure maybe it was my view?

Didn't think they were especially filthy, but Collins should have seen red for the tackle on Lennon IMHO.

Im not sure, it was more a kick than anything else, was particularly dirty I didn't think.

Obvious to see that crouch and pav dont suit eachother, and that 442 is in the passed. We need to start varying our play now that we have such a top player in vdv. 4231/433 looks like it could be the way to go. VDV has to be in the game as much as possible from now on, so if that means playing to suit him, then so be it.

I think when Defoe is back and hopefully on form we could do well with a 4-4-2.

Defoe does well with Crouch in a 442, but to get the best from vdv from what I have seen, he is best behind 1 striker.

VDV sold Dunne some dummy for the second goal, pure class !

I agree with therecklessone here. Nobody was jumping up and down shouting at the tackling except for the Lennon one - that should have been a red card on the basis of denying a goalscoring opportunity. Mind you it might be that nobody got excited because that had all been watching the Carl Henry incident before they came out - you should have heard the Oooh in the Irish club each time they showed that :)
