Apologies if this has been asked and answered, i didnt search very well :(

I series recorded a series on Virgin 1 during the summer. Tonight i saw that the same series was running on a different day on 'Channel One'.

This piqued my interest so i decided to watch the series i recorded. The DVR wont let me watch it because 'You are no longer subscribed to that service'. It turns out that Virgin 1 changed its name to Channel One and now my UPC box wont let me watch the series because the channel it was recorded from is no longer appearing.

Seriously. Really? I rang customer support and they confirmed this was the case.

Im raging about this because i had exactly zero warning that the channel was changing name and even less warning that this would be an issue.

    Anyone know anything about this?

Edit: Did a search and it seems this is indeed the case and theres no way around it.
    Nice. This actually encourages Piracy.

Unfortunately it is exactly as Customer Service confirmed. Any time a channel changes name, any recordings you have from that channel will no longer play back. As far as your PVR is concerned, "Virgin 1" is no longer a service you subscribe to (as it no longer exists!) so it won't decrypt when you try to play it back.

Im gobsmacked that thats the case.

Really, I cannot believe that such a flaw exists. Especially with the way channels change name so often.

Oh well, lesson learned. .avi's are always watchable.

FWIW, it's apparently exactly the same on Sky, so it's not a UPC specific 'feature'.

Trust me it doesn't happen on Sky. I have been able to watch recordings after channel name changes in the past.

Well, all I can say in my defence is that people on here have reported in other similar threads that it's so, I don't have Sky myself.

I've never seen it happen on Sky and I have had it for years.

It's a very basic flaw in the UPC guide - they should use another identifier for the channels - not the end user display name!:rolleyes:

Just remember, if you are resetting series links, that sky(the owner) is closing down Channel One and Bravo in the near future so you'll not be able to view recordings from these channels.

Last word was those channels will close at the turn of the year. Sky boxes usually in my experience allow playback of defunct channel recordings.

Users should also be aware that the Hallmark channel is due to rebrand to 'Universal Television' in the near future. This, presumably, will affect all recordings from Hallmark. Time to start transferring programmes to dvd or other source! Don't say you weren't warned!
