im driving a 1.6 corolla sr, and am in the process of doing it up(aesthetically only, atm, to keep on right side of insurance), and am thinking of fitting an aftermarket backbox, for the bigger tailpipe, and some high-end noise.

what can ye recommend for handy(VERY handy) money, and more importantly, could i fit it myself, with clamps, or is welding needed??

    ps
im handy enough myself, so clamps, cutting, etc is no prob, but welding is a different kettle of fish,i can do it, but not very tasty at it.

    any info/advice appreciated lads
    sound

If it's a backbox designed for your car then it's just a few bolts and off ya go. I had to change my exhaust a few months ago and it can be akward, the bolts had siezed up from years of not being touched so I just gave up!

I got a cat back taken off and new one on (labour only) for 50 quid. And it took them a good half hour to get the old one off!

You'll need to tell your insurance company.

Its a modification, without gains in power I doubt there will be an increase, your essentially just putting a non oem back box on as a replacement.

iv got third-party-only insurance, so no thief-appeal gains will apply either so, im fairly sure i dont have to declare it as a mod.

    am i still wrong??

Yes. What makes you think it's not a modification?

well it is a mod, and i really appreciate your help, but, the car isn't going to go faster with it, and if the car is robbed, the insurance company isn't going to have to pay out!!!
so if premium isnt going up, why say it??

It depends on the fitment, a bit of grinding/welding may be needed.

My advice would be to call the insurance co. before you do it and ask will your policy change

A muffler is just the tip of the exhaust, the part that sticks out of the 'box' as such.

A muffler is the American name for a back box.

OP, the cheaper backboxes are prone to splitting, also the baffles inside them tend to fail quite easily which leads to you sounding like your exhaust is blown rather than a sporty note.

Also it's worth noting that a louder backbox may not get you through an NCT so it's worth baring this in mind. If it is just aesthetics you're after you could try something like this, it wouldn't float my boat personally but it could be a good compromise for you.

thanks lads, what im looking for is something like this, mainly for a nice rumble at idle with a bit of growl just at high revs, like before a gear change like.

    ps
any of ye know what these boxes are like??

That would involve cutting your old backbox so at NCT it it fails you'll need to buy an OEM system. If you're hell bent on buying a backbox then get one that is made for your car, means if the Guards/NCT ask you to revert then you can without too much expense
