Brought my 06 car in today(passed) but only noticed when i got home that nct is only valid till January 2012 not sept 2012 as i thought? I only bought the car in August from a dealership so i suppose until August 2012 would be reasonable? It has been in the dealership all year till August.
Is this standard procedure? -Impossible to search for nct topics in here sorry if repost.

It goes fom the date of first registration, whenever that is. Most likely the dealer registered it and it hung around in the showroom, or was used as a demo until you bought it in August.

Thats a strange set up! What if the cars off the road and then i bring it in on say Jan 28th 2012. Would it then have to come back in on Jan 31st for its second nct?

Yes. The idea is that there be no benefit in delaying the NCT - your car should have been NCTd back in January.

Assuming that your NCT is valid until 31st January 2012, the answer is no.

NCT is counted on the anniversary of the first registration.
So in car was registered on 31st Jan 2006, then NCT is due on 31st Jan 2010, and next one on 31st Jan 2012.
You are allowed to do your test 90 days before due date.

So in other words, if you didn't do NCT now, car was off the road, and then you would do NCT on 28th Jan 2012, it would be valid until 31st Jan 2014. The same if you did it on 15 November 2011. Still valid until 31 Jan 2014.
But if you do it more then 90 days before due date (f.e. 15th October 2011) then if would be valid only until 31st Jan 2012.

I hope that's clear enough for you now.

CiniO's right - I forgot that a car can be tested early.

Thank you! That would be a sickener if it actually happened to somone! Alot of people have their second cars off the insurance and sitting in the drive with ncts lapsed-id say this may happen in the next few years!!
