Car warranty starting a few weeks after car is bought

    Lo all,

Have a puzzling one. One of the family has bought a car, and had to bring it back as something was wrong with it. Nothing major, but it seems that the family member must pay for it, as the 6 month warranty only starts a few weeks after the car was bought.

As most faults are found shortly after buying the car, not being covered under the warranty for the first few weeks strikes me as bizzare.

That is odd. But a warranty is always in addition to consumer rights, the sales of goods and supply of services act kicks in as soon as the purchase is made, so your relative should take them up on the basis of consumer rights.

http://www.consumerconnect.ie/eng/Hot_Topics/Guides-to-Consumer-Law/Buying-a-car/ gives advice and if you google for consumer rights and/or sale of goods act etc there's plenty of tips out there.

That sounds like utter rubbish to me. If there is a warranty it should cover the problems.

Sounds like the dealer is trying to pull the wool over someone's eyes.

I suspect that this is a 2nd-hand car and the "dealer" is refusing to rectify problems under the manufacturer's warranty as the "dealer" is not franchised. The warranty supplied is actually an insurance policy that starts when the manufacturer's warranty runs out.

Whatever the case warranty wise, as has already been pointed out, the consumer's statutory rights still apply.

My thoughts exactly. If it is covered by the manufacturer surley the dealer would advise the buyer to bring it to a franchised main dealer. I think he is trying to pull a fast one.

I have an idea what is happening here.
The seller has probably purchased a warranty for this car from mapre or one of those companies. The standard condition on those warranties is that the trader who sold the car must cover the cost of any repairs for first 2 or 3 weeks and then the bought warranty kicks in. This is obviously to prevent traders selling stuff with very obvious faults and getting the warranty people to repair it free for him.
Anyway, it sounds like the dealer in this case is pulling a fast one. Basically if his warranty company wont cover it until after 2 weeks, it is his responsibility to cover all issues in this time period and he well knows this.
    Give him a bollocking tbh.

Yes, the car was bought 2nd hand, from a large dealer on the Naas Road.

Seems the dealer covered the fault this time. Nice to know about the 3rd party warranty thing, though. Cheers for the info.

Happened to me recently. Bought car with minor problem and third party warranty. Garage were quite open about waiting for the exclusion period to elapse before doing the work. Main dealer.

I'd be very wary of a garage who were that open about committing fraud.
