Hey I have started planning my RTW trip and Have decided to go New York - Chicago - Route 66 - LA (and surrounding Areas) - Hawaii - Fiji - New Zeland - Australia - Bangkok etc - Home

Our plan was to leave in September but I have realised that this could be a bad idea weather wise. I don't want to attempt to cross Route 66 in winter bad weather (snow ice etc)!!

Any one have any sugggestions or even a better timeline to get the best of the weather!

Any suggestions at all would be welcome.

    Thanks

I think posting your current time line (i.e. where you intend to be at what times of the year) would make it easier for people to suggest amendments.

hey sorry tbh haven't really sorted out the time line. Like I said the plan was to leave in sept but after that its whatever suites.

Was kinda thinking new york for about 5 days then heading off to chicago to start route 66. Then it would be start of nov to Hawaii, New Zeland by December i suppose. Does that seem feasible?

I'm sorry if this seems a bit silly but when your taking a once in a life time trip I dont want it to rain all the time!! Or have to travel in bad weather!!

    Any suggestions are welcome!

Go the other way round. Into Auz, NZ Dec/Jan and it's summer time. When you hit the US around April/May the weather will be far better.

Australia's Winter is actually a winter and never mind the "their winter is better than our summer baloney" Queensland is grand in Winter, but NSW, VIC and WA have chilly winters and rain, pack a jumper and coat!

Where did you get the idea that Route 66 might have snow and ice in October? September would be nicer, but your original plan sounds fine. And it'd be far more pleasant than doing it in the summer heat.

    Hey,

We Plan on doing something similar, but our Leave date is 15th March, New York for Paddys Day!

It will be chilly there but as we move further south it gets warmer...

We go from NY and make our way to LA, Fiji, then NZ for a month where we plan to rent a campervan, and then into OZ to find work (for the winter) then party for the summer, then Singapore and Thailand on way back!

Apparently according to our agent, our timing is good weatherwise!

How many of you are going?

Most snowy weather will happen from December to February, but there's also a decent chance of some snow in November and March. The summer heat can be oppressive, making it unpleasant to get out of your car and walk any distance. April/May and September/October are probably the best times to go.
