    Hi,

This my first post in the motoring section of boards and hoping some folks might be able to put some light on this situation for me.

I have spent the last few months searching all the usual places for a used Ford Transit Crew Cab for my business. So far anything I have come across doesn't quiet fit the bill without a fair amount of modification.

I have decided to bite the bullet and but a plain Transit panel and doing a conversion to a crew cab myself. Of course ensuring to conform to correct safety standards with seat belts etc. Ensuring correct load space and the like

If I was to do such a thing do I have to change the vehicles usage on the vehicle registration certificate and does this attract additional VRT upon re regestration?

Also if I was to purchases the mini bus and remove some/most of the seats / black out windows etc would this require re registration / additional vrt?

I have already contacted the loacl VRT office and the gentleman I spoke to allthough polite and helpful was not particularly knowledgeable on what I was asking him.

Has anyone experience in doing this or know what the situation is.

    Cheers,

    Adrian

If you get a Transit LWB 350 and get that converted professionally, it stays in the same class. MWB or lower weight rated Transits will become passenger vehicles when converted.

Not sure about getting a minibus and converting that.

Whever you are in the country, I'd recommend talking to Parfit (Coachmans Roundabout near Dublin Airport). They have been doing that sort of thing for years.

There are rule changes due about commercial vehicles in 2011 (so the whispers on the breeze say), so I wouldn't hang around too long.

How sure are you of this, I can't find any reference or mention of this anywhere.

I know some vehicles are classified by their weight ie over 3.5 tonne and commercials have to have a minimum cubic feet of commercial load space but this is rather small (think car vans and the like) this is calculated using internal volume not chassis length

Unless Crew Cab regulations have changed in the past year, I'm 100%.

GVW of the vehicle has to be 3,450kg or higher, and meet a minimum load length to qualify as a Cat C commercial (€50 VRT).

Have had it done in the past to 350LWB Transits as it was quicker than a factory order for a Crew Cab.

Car Vans and the like are classified as Cat B commercials (along with Crew Cab pickups excpet the D-Max and Navarra) which have a VRT rate of 13.3%.
