Crap Nuig Library

I'm a 4th year student here, and have noticed since 1st year a decreasing decline in the library standards. I thought last year was the worst, but this year I think they're taking the absolute piss. I dunno what they were smoking when they decided to get rid of the desk reserve, it's literally impossible to get any core textbooks now. Also the staff themselves are as rude and as unhelpful as ever. The 1st week back was a joke with them all dressed up and having photoshoots out in the library, get a grip! And their ID checking policy at the door is a complete joke, they give you an unecessary amount of hassle going in, and the majority of the time there is no one even at the desk, anyone can stroll in. I think this year it's gone too far. Is it just me, or does anyone else agree?

LOL. I'm in the library now.. :D
I don't think it has gotten any worse.
I think the extra plugs around the place are a great addition too.
I never had to use the desk reserve as I'm studying engineering so can't comment on that aspect.
Time to get back to work.

I'd agree it's getting worse, I can't understand why desk reserve has been scrapped. It's gonna be impossible to get a look at books near exam time now.

The desk reserve books are still on reserve, just up with the rest of the books, heard a librarian explain that to someone yesterday. Hopefully its only temporary. I absolutely hate the new library website, it is complete ****, there was nothing wrong with the one they had two years ago.

Totally agree about the new website, in fact that's what got me to wriet about this. The old website was perfectly fine and easy to navigate, but this new one just seems to be all over the place, it's especially difficult to access the various database systems. Chances are we'll have more days, like last year, where the system completley crashed for hours. Cheers library heads!

In the library now too ha, asked the woman at the desk what the story with desk reserve was and she said they "needed to use the area for something else", which is a complete joke because its a tiny area and why couldn't they have just moved it instead of getting rid of it? The desk reserve books are up with the other books of that section, but there is no 3 hour desk reserve anymore, just 1 and 3 day loans. Definitely going to cause havoc at 1st year assignment time anyway, when 700 psych students are all trying to get the same 3 copys of one book.

I have to agree with you about the staff`s attitude. It takes the p**s the way they ask for your ID. I mean come on if i was going to steal books then weather i had an ID or not wouldn`t make a difference, the alarm would still go off. I do understand they have to be seen to do something but I`m in every morning early and I feel that one guy has just taken a dislike to me even though I have never given him a reason to be annoyed with me. This morning I seen this guy being stopped bringing a coffee into the library, "the coffee will not be going in", the way he said it even annoyed me don`t never mind the dude. Anyways i`ve often seen people with coffee cups in the library. The rules should be applied fairly to every one and not just when one of the door men feels like taking a power trip. Maybe I`m wrong but that just my opinion

Yeah I agree, either ask everyone for their ID, or ask no one.

So far this year I've just noticed one guy in particular asking for ID's - usually I'd walk straight on through so I've hardly even noticed him asking; he's been pretty short with everyone, as far as I can see. Either way it's a waste of his time, I don't get why they can't have a swipe card access system? It's just too inconsistent at the moment.

I've found the desk staff to be friendly enough but to be honest, haven't had to talk with them that much.

Its not to stop theft afaik, there used to be issues with secondary school kids studying in the library around exam time and other stuff like that.

Yeah I can understand about the secondary students. I know tonnes of people who felt that they would be better studying by themselves in the UCD library. That just shows the state of the Irish education system but I will leave that for another time.
I do think that there should be a swipe system.

We're lenient enough security-wise with books here.... Over-foreign you can't even bring bags or coats into libraries they're so worried about people defeating the beeping-thing!

They have a swipe system in Maynooth from what I remember but you still need someone on the gates so it works out the same really. I guess the difference in Galway is you never really know if you need your card or not depending on if someone is working at the door, but you always need it with a swipe system.

Same goes with the library in the Spanish university I was at on Erasmus - absolutely ridiculous. We have far better resources here.

I'm grand with the current system, I'm a final year student and used desk reserve once. Didn't see the point so I didn't bother using it again.

NUIG system is grand, an ID swipe card system might be a good idea (like they have abroad) but they're lenient enough compared to other universities as you can bring in bags and coats.

Echoing what others have said about foreign libraries, I much prefer our one. The books are much, much easier to find, system is more relaxed/strict at the same time (people making noise will be kicked out, but we're not forced to leave bags at the entrance) and so on.
Although a water fountain would be nice.

The facebook ban will be re-introduced shortly, including a complete ban of facebook in the library. For everywhere else, the ban goes from 8am to 6pm throughout the semester, is banned completely during the 2 sessions of study Weeks and exams, will be lifted for the Christmas and summer holidays.

Might help improve things in the library :)

Is this just in the computer suites or with laptops through wireless as well?

It is quite annoying when you see long queues for the computers in the suites when half of the people on the computers are on Facebook and you have something important to print for your next lecture.

I'd say it's just the computer suites.they couldn't really block facebook on the wireless, you are using your own laptop afterall.

Yeah was thinking. Just making sure, thanks.

    They could.
I'm not saying that they surely will, mind you, but as far as I can tell it's technically possible. So, it's likely to happen.

I agree that they shouldn't, but they absolutely could. If bandwidth is an issue they would be perfectly justified blocking facebook, they have no obligation to let you use the university's internet connection for social networking. I suspect not though, it's probably to free up the computers.

It's just on computers around the campus - Wifi will be unaffected

What's the story with the new library website?

I spent 10 minutes there trying to find a link to Jstor!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,165 ✭✭✭✭brianthebard

I know its ****ing annoying. If you click the 'find an e-journal' link you go into the journal search and shoudl be able to find it from there. I much prefered the old website, it was a little awkward because so much was contained in the side bar links but it made sense and was imo easy to navigate. Can you search by author any more? I'm not sure.

I've just spend a whole day trying to access a Philosophy Journal on the list there and being told I can't access it, despite paying 1600 for the priviledge of accessing the library's e-journal collection.
