Are custom roms safe to use?

Hi, today I downloaded an update to the miui rom and found three pictures of some random bloke in the gallery. This was after doing a full wipe before flashing. Now maybe it was in some cache on my SD card (is that even possible?). I couldn't find the file path. Anyways, I've completely formatted my phone and SD card and reinstalled another rom. Anyway it got me thinking......

How easy would it be for a developer to stick something sinister in on one of their roms, something that sends back info from the user, even bank account details entered into websites etc. Are custom roms actually safe at all?

You could argue the same about installing apps from the market. I think a few got kicked off for privacy issues recently....

Stick with the popular roms and hopefully they should be OK....

I don't use custom roms at the moment anyway, but as for the market, I am more careful what I install, I always read all the reviews before installing. same could be said for ROM's I guess :)
