Although some may find this an amusing or unusual question I do assure you it is quite genuine.
Most males here will be familiar with the ' drop and cough ' test that has been used in routine medical examinations like pre-employment medicals for as long as I can remember. What exactly is the test for ? What is the doctor checking out by doing this test ?

It's used to get a go of your balls, obviously.

Seriously though, I think it's to check for hernias.

It's part of the test for an Inguinal hernia all right.
Beloved of Carry on films in the 50's

Thanks for the replies , it just occured to me that another benefit of the test ( in small boys ) is that it would probably indicate undescended testicles ?

Remember asking the very same question to myself during my army medical a few years back!

That and being asked to stand up on my tippy toes!

I used to get it all the time as a child when the local health board carried out annual checks on National School students plus army medical as mentioned above. Recently in a medical for an office-based job with a US multinational .

Pretty normal spec , I wasn't surprised at being asked to drop and cough - I have always thought it is normal routine in all medicals ?

Nope. Nor when getting pants fitted (this thread reminds me of a friends episode :D)

Was thinking that, but didn't want to own up to watching it ;).

Seriously, OP, was not doubting you, just thought it was a tad excessive for an office job. Can understand it for physical work. But, I'm not a Dr. so, maybe there is a sound medical reason.
