Recessionary Cars

Well, it looks like the IMF (actually the EFSF) is poised to invade our beleaguered, cash-strapped nation, so I thought I'd start an ultra-cheap car thread. I don't mean Bangernomics, I mean ultra, ultra cheap.

    Guidelines:

750 euro MAX (assume 10% can be negotiated off)
    Good mpg (40+)
    At least some NCT
Some tax left is a big bonus
    Cheap to insure
    Mileage irrelevant
    New tyres a big bonus

Auto or manual, petrol or diesel, whatever's the cheapest to buy and run.

    I'll go first:

Oh jebus, buying a daewoo lanos is a sure sign that we're in a recession. I'd rather walk.

No, buy a <00 Punto, keep it serviced, and watch the coolant level. Ultra cheap motoring, reliable, and easy to fix. I know, I've done it, and I welded up the exhaust on a mates one this morning. Good, cheap, car. €250 perfectly possible.

So you're looking for a type of thread where brilliant cars with a long NCT are called for? maybe we should call it Bangernomics? :D

I'd say the ex PSNI armoured Land-Rovers are what we'll need now anyway!! Everyman for themselves and all that....

I know of a cement truck that is going very cheap....

AHHH a 1999 daewoo lanos, I'd die rather than be seen in that. Actually I buy a Motorbike and be killed in a horrid accident rather than touch it.
    Buy a Mcra

When the IMF comes in you'll all be thanking me. The Bangernomics thread tends to drift in and out of focus, and besides a lot of the cars in there are expensive to run.

So, to business. If the IMF/EFSF came in tomorrow and you had to buy a cheap, efficient car with some NCT, what would you buy?

A Suzuki Baleno, had one years ago and it was old then, never once failed me, cheap to run and went on and on. It's still going as far as I know or was about three months ago.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 879 ✭✭✭dunsandin

Baleno and Swift. Toughest little cars available, almost as tough as the Daihatsu Charade, the toughest small car ever assembled. I've had all three, and they are superb, if a bit tinny, but who cares about that.......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,808 ✭✭✭Bawnmore

Not a perfect car by any means, but €350 taxed and NCT'd. Might be a bargain for someone looking - http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1566279

oh god please please tell me this isnt what we've come to! Daewoo's and such. I often wonder who designed these pieces of dirt. Dreadful in every way. As another poster mentioned I'd far rather walk.

I can see where you're coming from, but I think it's a good idea for a thread. I'm a big fan of bangernomics, but as mentioned in the OP, a lot of the cars posted would have relatively high running costs.

I'm in the market at the moment for a bottom of the barrel car to keep me going for a few months so always interested to see what's out there. And cheap reliable cars should always sell, as there will always be a market for them. Just my 2c.

I'm actually looking for a POS runaround at the moment to get 12 months out of.

Anything in the 500-1000 euro bracket, cheap to tax (1.4l or less), with a valid NCT and a bone dry engine bay.

Anyone got recommendations for dealers that sell stuff like this? I have spotted a few dealers around Ballymount, the Airport, and another on the N4 which seem to fall into this bracket.

Does anyone here have a personal recommendation for a dealer who sells dirt cheap but reliable cars?

Edit: By the way I know there are loads privately available, but it's a pain in the rear end going around looking at loads of cars, would be good if there was a big forecourt full of reliable junkers to compare.

They are a tin can, but the oily bits are mighty. Good video on glue-pubes of Vicky Putyer-Handsoner testing one to destruction, and not getting to destruction.:D

Blimey, you're flush, my budget is always €450 for a car. 1 months finance on a middle of the road car-my benchmark for what I can spend to get 6 months (minimum) motoring. But I always change the timing belt and tyres, and service it fully.

:) I was more of a buy them for small yet not insignificant money, spend as little as possible on them, sell them for as much as possible 3 or 4 months later. I've retired now :o (don't know if it will be permanent or not, no itch at the mo)

Its a bit of a disease with me! I love buying cheap cars and running them till they die or I get bored. Don't think I've ever sold one still running, they almost all go to the scrappies. Because I use them for work, they get piled up with tools and crap, and it would kill my meanness gland to do it to a newer car. Even with vans in the yard, its still nicer to be able to jump into the latest banger and just shoot up to a job in a bit of comfort. Did I ever mention I like the Volvo S40 best for this, so far?:D Cheap as chips, big enuf and comfy. 1.8 ok on juice too.

Just out of interest, has anybody noticed just how many older cars are out and about lately. I was stopped in a line of traffic and there were as many 90's Sunnys and astras in the queue as 03+ cars. I dont remember the last time I saw a Sunny on the road. Are people just digging up whatever car they can get in order to stay motoring? Or are these all replacing the posh one that was repo'd??

i am looking at volvo s40's at the min for the same thing, drive till it stops, trying to get on with a leather interior for sub 1000, but they look great value and dont seem to give much trouble. i asked my mechanic about volvo s40 laguna and mondeo's for 750 euro and said the volvo, and defo not the laguna.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 879 ✭✭✭dunsandin

Pre 99 lagunas are not a bad car, they're much maligned, but I'd be leaning towards the Volvo - just check the driveshafts Carefully, they're a weak point, especially the longer one. Not really hard or dear to change tho, if you buy a used good shaft. The mondy is a lovely drive and are also fairly tough, but the diesels are a bit inclined to eat themselves once the mileage starts rising. The 1.8 petrols are lovely to drive, personally I hate the 1.6's, and that goes for all 1.6's, 1.8's are almost always a better motor for high mileage.

Right , serious suggestion... Matiz !!

Ok ,Ok, you finished?, spilt your tea?,

i am on my second one, jeremy clarkson picked it as best of three about 50 years ago.

have my present one five years(its seven), not 40 k miles yet, cost to maintain , s.f.a.
48 mpg, when my family on board(those who will get in) on steep hills , loaded lorries pass me. one or two on board, nips along nicely.

apparently indestructible wee car , parts to be found in ditches.

wait for it more room for the front seat]people, pass and driver than in an audi a4.

    Street cred , None

i have a few other cars about me and choose this mostly, for round town its a dote!

    Regards ,Rugbyman

S40's of that era had Renault oily bits for the most part, the Mitsubishi GDI engine being the rare exception.

I have own both mentioned, first Matiz and now s40, and Matiz was a joke for a car, S40 is a proper car.

I have promised myself never to buy Daewoo again, however I might buy another Volvo someday.

Fine, but for this thread a Matiz is just right imo.

Nope, even for recession there are better cars available for little money than Matiz,

For instance Renault Clio, Opel Astra, Ford Escort etc.

It needs a gearbox, hardly a good buy when it needs €600/€800 thrown at it to get it moving and the NCT is out in 5 months.

Pre-1999 Peugeot 106's are a very underrated car. Tax, insurance, fuel economy are all excellent and reliability should be good as long as you keep the car serviced.

If you see a sub €1,000 car with a decent NCT like the one I've linked to, don't delay arranging to see it. Very often these type of car are sold the day they are listed.
