you may drive it home IF it is deemed roadworthy or to a repairer.

there are 2 different fails, cant remember the names but one means the car is to be taken away and fixed, and the other fail means the car is in a dangerous condition and should not be driven,
i have never heard of someone not being allowed to drive home from an nct though?

You can drive wherever you want on the day it failed. NCT regulations doesn't apply to cars that failed NCT on fail date.

    From S.I. No. 567 of 2009

ROAD TRAFFIC (NATIONAL CAR TEST) REGULATIONS 2009

    (5) This Regulation does not apply to a vehicle—

    (a) first registered prior to 1 January 1980,

    (b) which is used solely on an off-shore island,

    (c) on the day on which a test certificate in respect of the vehicle had been refused, or

    (d) which is owned or operated by the Garda Síochána or the Defence Forces.

Anyway, even then NCT regulations doesn't apply, you have to make sure that car is roadworthy, as it's an offence to drive not roadworthy car.
NCT result might be a good guide for you if a car is roadworthy.
