Is car scrappage only towards a new vehicle or could I possible scrap a good condition 1990 car for a 2nd hand van?

Scrappage is only available against the purchase of a new passenger vehicle (tax bands A&B only) as it's essentially a VRT rebate.

The Government scrappage scheme or discount only applies against a new car.

However some franchised dealers are running promotions where they will give a discount against used cars if you trade in your old car to be scrapped. This is basically just a more attractive way of giving a cash discount off the used car. Equally if you buy a used car straight ie. have no old car to trade in or scrap, you would probably negotiate a similar discount.
