HDMI Laptop to RCA TV

Right, so since I got my laptop last Xmas I missed the fact I was able to have it hooked up to my TV like my previous one which had S-Video out. This one, like most new laptops, comes with only HDMI / VGA out.

The compromise has been streaming everything through the Xbox via TVersity but I was limited to certain things. (I want to stream TV channels, play me games, etc)

Anywho, I want to go back to having my laptop connected to the normal CRT TVs that use the Scart input. I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience in using any of signal converter boxes in this scenario. I know you can get VGA to Composite cables but I doubt they would work in this laptop scenario.

I'm only asking becuase they ain't too cheap to a guy with feck all money.

What inputs can your TV take?

VGA is an analog signal, so it's your best option for a video feed as there's no conversion box required to convert digital (HDMI) to analog (Scart/S-Video).

Here is an incredibly generic search result for VGA to S-Video adapter.

With this adapter you can use a standard RCA cable to hook up the yellow RCA female to your TV, that'll supply the video. Then you need a 3.5mm headphone to 2 RCA (Red & White) to provide 2 channel audio. Plug that into the Red & White inputs on your TV, and the headphone jack into the headphone socket on the laptop and you should be golden. Alternatively, if you require SCART input, 3xRCA [Yellow, Red+White]->Scart adapters are plentiful :)

This lot should cost you less than a fiver.

Do note that the viewing experience won't be up to much except for movies - most CRT tvs are for standard definition (as in 720x576) while resolutions for computers these days mostly start at 800x600.

See www.svideo.com, set pc refresh rate to 60mhz.ON SDTV, picture quality is dvd resolution,ok for some games, videos, not good enough for webrowsing, apart from using video sites ,veoh, youtube. You can use large icons, fonts makes it easier to use on old tv.
You can buy a secondhand 19inch monitor, vga, lcd around 80euro, on adverts.ie, not really worth using an old tv, unless you are just watching dvds or videos on it.

    Cheers guys!

I'm used to the setup from computer to analog TV, I had a nice setup with my last laptop hooked up to my TV and surround speakers. I used to use it for movies and as a games machine via a 4-way Playstation joypad adapter, which was great whenever people called over for a few beers. :pac:

I've some cash left in my 3V voucher I think, nice one :D Thanks!
