Can You Believe They Still Release New PS2 Games

When Madden NFL 2005 was released in North America in September 2004, it was possibly one of the last official releases for the PSX console, which had originally gone on sale in the region on September 9th 1995

Fast forward to 2010, and Amazon.co.uk currently lists at least 8 games for pre release for the PS2 before the end of the year. This makes no mention of Rapala Pro Bass Fishing 2010

By the time of the last release, in March 2010, Sony will have provided console support for the PS2 for at least 10 years...and this may yet continue...as PS2 outsold DS by 20 Million and is still selling consoles second hand and games are still being purchased.
It's pretty much unheard of for a video game company to devote resources to an 11-year-old console. But Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has apparently filed a patent for what looks like a PS3 peripheral that would allow gamers to play PS2 games.

Sony is considering increasing the lifespan of the PS2 as it's popularity has actually hampered people from upgrading to a PS3 because of backwards compatibility issues

    Where's that quote from?

Surely developing a peripheral which allows PS2 playback on the PS3 counts as supporting the PS3? :)

It is great to see continued PS2 development though, then again with such a large install base there's no reason not to continue to support it. For instance, Fifa 10 sold 1.25m copies on the PS2, that's most than a lot of AAA games released on current gen consoles.

Can't remember, but it's an actual physical add on that you plug into the PS3. I saw a diagram, looks like a disc drive with a cable into the PS3.

    MADNESS.

There's a thread on the ps2 adapter already in detail, it's not a disc drive it's everything but a disc as the games would be put in the PS3's drive.

they still sell 7 million PS2 consoles a year so why not keep making new games, i think there are over 100 million consoles out there thats a big market.

Both of the older consoles are over 100 million now PS1 is at 102.49 million the PS2 has hit 145.4 million, but your still right about the the sales and the market.

If you owned Sony or any company for that matter and were still making oodles of cash from PS2 games and consoles, what would you do?
Granted they tried to use backward compatibility on the PS3 but that PS2 dongle sounds interesting , any link? (Even though my 60GB launch is still rocking)

Some countries just cant afford a PS3 so the PS2 still sells big there.

Most Brazilians still couldn't afford one because in Brazil as they are at the bargain price of $461US, and definitely couldn't afford the $1,130US for a PS3.
