Interesting in depth testing and analysis of various Antivirus products available at the moment.

Two reports broken down between on demand scanning (Regular virus defination updates and filesystem scanning) and proactive detection (Realtime hueristic-based malware detection)

As they are the most referred to products here I have just highlighted the five most common AV products with well known free versions.
    On demand scanning (Aug 2010)

    On Demand Certification Rankings

    Three Star: Avast, Avira
    Two Star: MSE, AVG, Kapersky
    Proactive detection (Feb 2010)

    Proactive Certification Rankings:

    Three Star: MSE, Avira,Kapersky
    Two Star: Avast, AVG.

For me the pick of the bunch are MSE, and Avira, MSE has excellent proactive detection and low false positive rate, albeit quite a slow full filesystem scan. Avira has both great on demand and proactive detection ratings and quick scanning, but let down a little bit by an higher false positive rate than MSE.

Kaspersky performs exceptionally well in the proactive detections, and decently in the On demand scanning.

Avast has an exceptionally quick scanning and good on demand detection rates but average enough proactive rating.

AVG doesn't really excel at either compared to the alternatives but does certainly not disgrace itself by any means and is still solid product.
