iPhone battery drain

Finally got my new iPhone 4 yesterday. Didn't charge it last night and this morning the % was at 96%. So far today I've listened to some music, browsed Facebook, Twitter, news apps and received a couple of calls. The battery % is now at 77%. I have location services turned off, auto-brightness off, email push every hour, only Facebook push notifications on.
For what I've used is this normal battery drain? The phone is running iOS 4.0.1 so has to be updated to 4.1, this may help the battery? Maybe I should have fully charged it as soon as I got it but couldn't resist playing with it :D
    Thanks for any advice! :)

Go to multi tasking and see what app are still running in the background.

You usage seems normal to me.

Yeah seems about right to me too.

After reading about apps running in the background draining the battery I have been closing them down from the multitask bar after I'm finished with the app so there's not much running in the background.

Mine on 4.0.1 lasts 2 days with similar use as you described. So overnight and almost afternoon to be down 23% seems perfectly fine.

I'll continue with the same usage for the rest of the day and see how it is this evening.
    Cheers!

I wish I was getting that battery life.
I could take the phone off the charger in the morning, and still lying in bed, check emails and Facebook for 10 mins. By the time I'm getting out of the bed, it might already be at 96%
I'm lucky to come home any evening with about 40% battery leftand that's with me plugging it in to the car stereo via USB while driving.

Most of the time apps "running in the background" aren't, so that's going to be of little general benefit.

Have you run it fully down then charged it again? That sounds pretty heavy to me. I get two full days out of mine as long as I'm using it sensibly. I use Battery Doctor from the App store every now and again and it seems to help.

It is if Skype is one of them. I've found it sucks up quite a bit.

+1 on Skype .... it's a battery hogger! Kill after closing it.
No other apps have noticable drain.

Have given up on turning off location services, 3G etc. ... not sure that they really save much battery.

    Just charge it overnight.

Uses up around 10-15% over an average day if you forget to kill.

Hold one down then just click on the red circles one by one. By the sounds of it it'll take a while!

Not with them all, as all don't use battery, but some do. Skype uses a lot when left running. If I'm heading out for the day, and away from a charger, I make sure all apps are quit after use just to be on the safe side as you could use up 5-10% of your battery.

If you are running an old app that has'nt been updated for multitasking it can put a significant dent in your battery life. Anyone having battery problems should check when their apps were last updated in iTunes. Click on apps and in the right pane at the top you should see name, seller, genre, size, kind. Click on the bar where these titles are and you should see a dropdown list. Tick on date modified and you should see the dates all your apps were last updated.

Did a restore to 4.1 last night before JB and there is now an emormous difference in battery. Thought I was getting pretty good usage before this but now it's stunning. After 17 minutes of app store, email and browsing it dropped to just 99%.

It should be noted as pointed out by saurik on cydia when u charge ure phone to 100% u often get more than that somewhere around 106%. An accurate way is wait until it drops to 97/96% and try again.

Interesting, will try that. Also very odd this morning to wake up and find the phone still on 100% too, wifi and 3g were off and normally are, but I usually get a 2-5% drop over night.

    OK here's my story.

    Iphone 4
    Running on 4.1
    Not jailbroken.

    Charged it fully overnight
Recieved 1 call today. Approx 2 mins
Recieved 2 texts and sent 3 texts.
Browsed the BBC, Sky Sports and Eurosports apps for approx 20 mins.
Listened to the Talksport on it's app for 40 mins

Took phone off charge at 7.20am this morning.
Phone died at 5.40pm this evening.

    Thoughts?

    OK update.

I took my phone off charge at 7.20am this morning.

So far today I have browsed some news apps for approx 20 minutes and used some other miscellaneous apps for approx 10 minutes.

I have recieved two texts and sent three texts using Eirtext.

I have not made any calls.

I have made sure that I kill all apps when I'm finished with them.

My battery now stands at 52% after 6hrs and 40 minutes.

Based on my usage is this right? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

That's really heavy going. It seems to be around 25% less than where mine would be with similar usage. 20 minutes of of browsing would see mine down to around 95%. I'd let the battery drain completely tonight and charge overnight. Also no harm trying a reboot, hold sleep and home button until Apple logo appears.

I would say Talksport is by far the biggest culprit there. 40 mins of continuous data usage is going to be hard on the battery.

In general, I turn screen brightness down below 50% and push notifications off, I find they are the worst offenders.
