A friend of a friend was telling me there's some great deals on baby equipment out in the Fairyhouse Sunday market, she got her sister a kick ass pram a few weeks back.. Said it was a grand in the shops and she got it for €350 or something like that.. Hmmmmmm !!

Anyone been out there for baby gear and can confirm this? Myself and the OH were thinking of heading out on Sunday if there's any truth to it :D

Ive heard its a great place for buying in bulk; nappies, formula etc.

We might pop out the weekend ourselfs.

Just be carefull buying stuff like prams out there, the price might be right and everyone loves a bargain but you have zero comeback with most of traders at markets.

All due respect, but anyone who buys baby formula at a car-boot really needs to have a word with themselves.

As for prams etc, you've no comeback and could potentially be buying a fixie.

What kind of pram costs over €1,000?

:D Good point. I aint bought any but I have not heard any complaints yet.

Well that's what I was wondering.. I have my pram already but I'm interested to see if there's any truth to this, I'd say it's more than likely a case of Chinese whispers and the pram was originally said to be €750 in the shops or something.. These stories have a habit of growing legs when they're doing the rounds..

Anyway, it's on this Sunday so we said we'll take a spin out and have a ganders for ourselves.. We need a Moses basket, not too much can go wrong with one of those if we find a good deal.

What make of pram is it? Have you checked prices up North?

We used our pram very little after all the to'ing and fro'ing over getting it.

Couldn't tell you.. This is why I'm asking if anyone knows what's out there..

I'm dying to see this 'all singing, all dancing' pram for myself :D if I find out, I shall report back..

Alot of travel systems are up around the 1k mark in Ireland,it is crazy.
I got mine for 1/2 what it was in a well known shop here in the UK,shopping around pays off!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,862 ✭✭✭✭January

Bugaboo's with all the extras and iCandys can cost around 1k to buy... depending on where you buy from.

I haven't been to the Fairyhouse Market for ages, but the last time I was there they only had strollers not travel systems and I wouldn't be buying formula from there either, but nappies are great value from there! Most stuff that is brought there is from Musgraves anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,196 ✭✭✭crazy cat lady

I reckon our Quinny probably worked out at over 1k after the exchange rate etc... but we did get it alot cheaper than we would've paid here for everything that we got.

Don't think I'd be buying a pram from a market. Its the kinda thing you want to get a guarantee for

I got my buggy there, eh over 12 years ago.
I hadnt' seen anything I like anywhere and in the pavillion there was a pram section set up.
Far as I recall at the time it was someone who has a shop up north who comes down.
There were different types of display and when I bought mine it was taken from the box and put together for me on the spot.

The parenting forum is for all parents and those parenting children.
It is not just for female parents.

IF you have an issue with a post report it do not make snarly remarks in the thread.

thebullkf if the forumla is a well known brand and is correct and intact I don't see the difference or frankly the harm.

so if SMA is being sold-outdoors-@ a market you'd buy it because 'don't see the difference or frankly the harm' then i pity any of your children being fed from the stuff.i'm actually astounded that you condone this.

    i wouldn't buy dog food @ a market.

That is your choice and my children dont' need your pity.
Growing up and buying and eating cake and bread and apple tarts from the local market on a Sunday never did me any harm, nor has eating anything which we have bought from the local farmers market done my kids any harm.

If a branded product is in the same condition as would be found in a shop then I don't see how it being in a market makes it a danger. Shops certainly are not sterile and I can tell you the good entrances of shops esp supermarkets and the vast ware houses of cash and carrys are not either.

    One word - counterfeit.

The manufacture and distribution of counterfeit baby formula is a big world-wide criminal problem. The FSA constantly warn UK consumers about the dangers of buying baby food at car-boot sales and outdoor markets.

As well as counterfeits, there are also batches of goods that have been recalled that still make it onto markets. In February of this year, Heinz UK recalled thousands of pots of baby food after plastic pieces were found by consumers in some batches.

Again as I said previous if correct and intact.
I don't know what sorts of dodgy markets some people have been going to but there are plenty of above board ones.

they do if you're buying SMA out of the back of a van in some field.
i would've thought that giving a child the best start in life is foremost in a parents mind.
It was in mine-i also believe that buying baby formula like described above displays a lack of intelligence and/or could result in serious harm to children.
Growing up and buying and eating cake and bread and apple tarts from the local market on a Sunday never did me any harm, nor has eating anything which we have bought from the local farmers market done my kids any harm.

different ball game altogether-and i think you know this.
Babies don't eat cakes and bread-also local co-ops/markets aredifferent to a stall set up in fairyhouse/Balbriggan etc.
    If a branded product....

its baby formula we're talkin about- not shower gel, toothpaste etc.

Ok so we went out there today but I couldn't really see much tbh.. I was half expecting a huge display of baby stuff but there were only a few random stalls dotted around.. We bought some nice little hand knitted cardies and hats off a nice young girl, she knits all the stuff herself apparently..

There were a few flimsy buggies outside but they were more for older babies, the McClarren types.. No moses baskets and I didn't see any nappies or formula, unless we missed something, I'm pretty sure we covered the whole place.. Maybe we just went on a bad day.. Ended up getting loads of stuff for Daddy though  he had a great time at the DIY stalls..

Ended up getting our moses basket and rocker out in Smyths, so we're nearly done now :D

how do you know-its a sealed container.?
same could be said for tescos formula-BUT chances arethe storage/transport controls are stricter. ie. not stored in a transit in baking heat-or in a damp shed somewhere.

Again I don't know what sort of dodgy markets you go to but a lot of the open air markets esp farmers markets are well run and often have stalls from reputable business and shops at them.

I wasn't talking about stuff which fell off the back of a truck, seems you are.

They do, and the do eat the organic fruit and veg.

since when is Fairyhouse a farmers market?
I used to go to the one in Drogheda, and Balbriggan-,Santry,Dandelion,Blackrock and the one out off the long mile/N7
I wouldn't buy SMA from any of them.
Are those markets reputable enough for you?(with the exception of Balbriggan)

    How very presumptious of you.

AGAIN we're talking about Baby Formula not organic fruit and veg and for the record i never gave cakes to babies no matter how organic.

    Please don't presume i buy illegal goods, i don't.

Let me be very clear here so you don't go trying to reply like that again: You need to drop that tone. You didn't simply reply "what's your problem?". Your posts were downright rude. I was trying to be relaxed in the warning I gave you so that we could all just move on, but you didn't pick up on that. Do not question me on thread again. If you need to, feel free to use the dispute resolution process.

You can keep that back seat modding to yourself. It is a bannable offence and I wont hesitate to enforce it if you do it again.

Im new to this site and just read back thru this thread, im only 10 weeks gone and i dont have any other children but I just felt I wanted to reply to this.
As a pregnant woman Im suffering a lot at the moment but the thoughts of my little baba brings a smile any time! Already i wud do anything for it, and i do plan on giving it everything it needs and wants even if the budget has already flew out the window. But i havn't forgotten where i came from and my own up bringing, as a kid we used to love being brought to markets and as long as they are reputable I don't see the snobbery surrounding them. Now that we have all had a taste of the wonderful celtic tiger we think we're too good for such places and top buck should be paid for everything even if at the back of our mind we know we're being ripped off.
No mother goes thru pregnancy and birth to put her child in harms way, we are all adults and will protect our kids in any way, so giving your pity to kids for example whose parents chose to buy formula somewhere you dont agree with would be an insult in my mind.
too many of us have so called silver spoons in our gobs and snobbery is an excepted standard but all im saying is its a parents right to chose what they feel is right for their child and not a by standers right to comment on their judgment.
Its ok if you dont agree with my post, its ok if you do, its just my opinion!
    aah there's my rant over:D

It isn't about snobbery, it's about safety.

As I said earlier, counterfeit baby-formula is big business in the developing world, plus you also might be buying a product from a previously recalled contaminated batch.

The immune system of a baby has not yet fully developed - that's why we sterilise baby bottles.

As for farmer's markets? I really don't care how organic and ethical a cake is if there have been flies and wasps buzzing around it all Saturday afternoon!

Thankfully I've yet to see anyone even attempting to sell baby formula at a market - farmers, car-boot or otherwise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,485 ✭✭✭✭Khannie

Eh.....Your child is gonna crawl around and pick things up off the floor for several months and stick them in his or her gob. This is absolutely unavoidable. Not a parent alive can say that they 100% prevented their child putting things in their mouth that they would prefer they didn't. An organic cake from a market would be the least of my concerns.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 318 ✭✭littlemissfixit

Agree with you Khannie! They will probably eat the flies and all :D

I have never heard of counterfeit baby-formula full stop never mind in this country.
Do you have any links about it that you can share?

something that came to my mind was a problem with baby formula in china about two years ago iirc.
not exactly a reputable link but the info seems easy to understand. im sure if you google it you can find some more trustworthy info.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Chinese_milk_scandal

this was at the time when my daughter was still on formula and it knocked me for six tbh, was very wary about where i bought the formula as irrational as it sounds!

btw i know this was not sma or whatever other formula is here but it just goes to show you that we never know whats in the stuff regardless of where we buy it. although if you're buying legitimately (sp?) you have a comeback (god forbid) should anything like that ever occur here.

Thats north america and africa, but nothing in Europe or here in Ireland
which is most likely why I have never heard of it being an issue here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,485 ✭✭✭✭Khannie

Not to be too pedantic either, but in the first one it says:
TFDA experts said the tested samples of S-26 milk were actually ”sub-standard” and not counterfeit as earlier reported.

And all three were in shops!

edit: While I take your point, I think you can take these things too far. Not eating an organic cake because it's been in the open air for a few hours...well...that's taking things too far IMO. As I said earlier, your child will naturally be exposed to much worse that you can't prevent. Of course, to each their own.

On the safety of baby food; Well, unless you're growing stuff yourself, there is some element of risk involved. You can't say with any level of certainty that the products you're buying are not contaminated with *something*. You just have to hope and assume they're good. There was a case of poisonous cooking oil in Spain some time ago link. Deaths were involved. I still buy cooking oil. In a planet with 6 billion people, there will be some bad stuff happening. I don't base life choices around isolated incidents though.

As I said though: To each their own.

Have to admit I didn't hear about that. Pretty scary stuff alright.

i think the main thing is if you're buying from a market then generally you will have no leg to stand on should anything be wrong with the formula.

it may be perfectly fine or it may be contaminated/recalled/out of date, the fact is you wont be able to trace it back or complain like you could if you had bought it from a shop. and generally it would be less likely to be dodgy in a shop than from an unknown source.

i went to buy a pack of juices there a while back and it was only when i checked the date on them that i knew they were a year out of date! and theres no doubt that they werent gonna tell me if i went to buy them!!

and yet it doesnt stop me buying crepes or waffles there every time i go!!

yep! you know near the gate where there does be a white van and in front of it theres loads of boxes of food, like crisps and sweets, not a good explanation at all but it was there!

edit: forgot to say in fairyhouse!
