    Hi,

    First time buyer/driver, have a quick Q.

Buying a 2nd hand car off a woman in work, the car has been off the road for 6 months and she hasnt been paying tax, she made the relevant arrangements to let whoever it is needs to know, that the car was off the road, so i understand i need not worry about paying back tax.

My question is, what do i need to get off her going forward with regards to renewing the tax, is it all me now with one of those rf100a forms or do i need anything off her?

    Thanks in advance,

    Chris

You don't need any paperwork as far as I know - I think you just need the standard motor tax form. Even if she had not declared it off the road, you would not be liable for any back tax.

Remember that you will be liable to pay road tax from the start of the month that you buy it, so I'd wait a few days.

    Thanks Eoin,

not sure what you mean by the last bit, could you please elaborate?

    Thanks again

If you were to buy the car right now, you would be liable for the motor tax from the 1st of September, despite only owning it for a couple of days in September. If you wait until the 1st of October, then you're only liable for the road tax from October onwards.

If the tax isn't expensive, then it might not be a big deal, but it could be the difference of over €100 for a larger car - and why pay more tax than necessary!

But how will they know when i buy it, i am picking it up on Saturday, its a private sale.

    I guess thats october anyway!

Because the change of ownership form will be dated by the seller. Not sure how they match this with the motor tax form - it's been a while.

You are only liable for motor tax from the time you use it on the road not from when you buy it.

Yes, but the OP pretty much implied that s/he would be using it immediately.

They match exactly to the date on the form.
So if he purchased a car on 30th September, then he will be liable for tax from the beginning of September, as 30th September is the date of change of ownership.

If he buys a car without a tax, he's not legally allowed to use it straight away.
To be fully legal, he has to first wait for his VRC to arrive (anything between 5 - 30 days or even more in rare cases) and then go to motor tax office to tax it.

    I don't think I was being clear.

I just meant that as it sounds like the OP will not be declaring the car off the road, then he or she will be liable for the road tax from the 1st day of the month he or she bought it.

quite simple. Go to the gards barrack after the first of the month and ask them to stamp the form to witness your signature stating it has not been on the road since you bought it....ask for tax from the Ist, pay the money bobs your doodah.
