    hey!
i'm doing the leaving cert and i'm a bit clueless as to what i want to do next year.
just wondering does anyone here do or has done the music technology course in maynooth and whats it like? also are there many jobs you can get afterwards.
i don't do music cos i didn't get it in my choices but i play violin, enjoy singing, listening to music and mixing songs and stuff like that.
would you recommend it as a good course for me to do?
    thanks :)

Hey I've just started the course this year and although we haven't really done a lot yet, I think it looks really interesting. Jobs afterwards depends on what you do in 3rd Year, as far as I'm aware you have to specialize in the final year once you figure out what exactly you want to do.

For the course you don't need to have done music. At the moment we're going over the very basic music theory, so you don't need to worry about it. If you can play violin you probably know some of the basics too. I think as long as you have a good interest in music you should enjoy it.

Hope this helps and feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken about 3rd year.

Well with the Music Tech you do Music and Computer Science modules but it's a Bachelor of Arts so you take 2 Arts subjects as well. I'm doing Maths and Geography for the moment. Maths is hard though so I might be swapping. :/

I'm in second year now doing music tech with business. Did economics last year but it just did not suit me at all :(. I think you definitely need some music theory knowledge before you start. A few people last year who hadn't studied music found it very confusing and a little difficult when we started doing jazz harmony theory for second semester, even after the basics at the start of the year. But as Rafcam said, since you play violin you probably know a lot that'll be helpful. The computer science modules can be a little difficult and boring too. The maths isn't too bad, it took a little while to click for me, but that's probably down to lack of study. Oh, and don't expect to get studio access in first year. We didn't get any time in it last year but this year we have a Recording Engineering module for both semesters. They have been altering the course each year though so it could change! The lecturers have all been really sound so far too. I'm really enjoying the course, it's really interesting and I'm very excited about my choices for next year :D. Some people go into teaching, some people go into radio, some go into studio production, some people make music, there are a good few options for careers afterwards! One of the things we were told last year was that we would graduate as scholars rather than sound enginners. It's more of a theoretical course than practical, or at least that's what it was like in first year...

I don't know if anything I've written has been helpful, I'm not very good at making things sound good :o. I'd definitely recommend it!
