Vista - Error Message - xbkk.exe

For the last few days Windows (Vista) gives me an error message as soon as the laptop is turned on.

It tells me that "xbkk.exe has stopped working". It then searches for a solution, doesn't find one, and tells me to close the program.

Everything seems to be working as normal otherwise.

What is xbkk.exe? Is it important?

A day before this started Avira found some Malware (Trojans) and put it in quarantine - is this the cause of the problem?

xbkk.exe is most likely viral, it's certainly not a legitimate Windows file anyway.

just done a quick google and yes it seems to be a trojan.

Download and use malwarebytes. It can be found here->http://www.malwarebytes.org/

See if it that gets rid of it.

Edit:did avira not give you a choice of removing it rather than putting it into quartine(sp?)

    Thanks for your replies.

Avira has found it several times, but not during an actual scan. I am notified by a popup message from the System Tray that Malware has been detected, so I think it is the AntiVir Guard. I am given an option to "Remove" - which I choose. However, the problem files are listed in Quarantine.

When this originally happened I immediately put the laptop in Safe Mode and ran a scan with mbam. It found nothing. I also scanned with Spybot Search and Destroy, which also found nothing. A subsequent Avira scan found nothing.

However, the notification that "xbkk.exe is not working" is still appearing and Avira notified me again this evening that Malware had been found and there is a new file in Quarantine now.

I have no idea where this came from. I only browse boards, wiki, tripadvisor and other common sites - no dodgy sites! I never download games or anything like that. The only thing I have installed in the past few days is Mathcad.

Perhaps post over on the virus and malware forum. Some of the posters there know their stuff especially on getting rid of the tougher infections.

Thanks so much for your replies.

I might post over on Virus and Malware if that issue continues. The "xbkk.exe" message has stopped appearing today. Avira found 4 Trojans today and quarantined them. Subsequent Avira, MBAM and Spybot scans came up clean too.

I now have another Windows issue - it is possibly caused by the Malware.

I went to turn off System Restore, as suggested in some forums, before using MBAM. It appears it may already be disabled. The problem is that there does not appear to be any way to enable it again.

When I open System Protection everything is greyed out - nothing is clickable so I cannot tick the boxes beside any drives(in fact no drives are listed - it says "searching"), or click Apply or Ok. I didn't turn off System Restore in the first place, so is this the virus?
