So im seeing a parking brake fault light on the dash after having hassle on Saturday when it refused to unlock.
I had to disconnect the battery to get it to unlock itself.
Im afraid to use it now and am parking while in gear now :(
Anyone have experience with this before?
Do i have to go to VW to sort it?
The last time i went to VW they charged me 70 euro just to look at something to tell me it was ok :(

If theres one thing i hate about the car is that silly button hand brake, give me a bog standard lever any day.

Handbrake switch can now be replaced in about 10 minutes by any competent mechanic.

It's so frequent that the indy we use keeps the buttons in stock and we'll either send folk in to him if the car will still move, to wait while he does the job.

If the car is stuck we'll send him out to do it at the side of the road.

I thought there was a software update required too?

Seems to just be a simple change of the button now. Used to be a big job and had to go back to VW, but they must have found a way around that.

Same with the steering column sensor now. Used to be a whole new steering column, but they've eventually figured out that you just need to replace the sensor which is a hell of lot cheaper.

How much does the switch cost, and who's the indy? I've a feeling i'll be needing one for my sister in law's car soon.

Thanks folks, glad its not a big job.
Had to splash out 900 euro earlier in the year to replace an injector :(

Any more problems ill be changing to another marque tbh.
Really like the car, lovely to drive, solid build, plenty of power and torgue, very well specced etc but i just wonder would i have similar issues with an Avensis,Mondeo or other car in the same class.

I have a friend whos services his own cars etc, wonder if he could change the switch for me.

Also R.O.R a mate told me he knows someone who also thought it was a switch but turned out to be a bigger job, is this possible?

Think it's about €70 to get the switch replaced. I know the last few we've had with flashing lights on the dash have been OK after the switch change.

Thanks for that, howver i hope we are talking about the same fault, i get a parking brake fault and the orange light staying on, it doesnt flash, wonder if its the same issue and a simple switch to fix or something more serious.

I do think they are just different results from the same problem, but I'm not an expert - just have a lot of experience.

If you are Dublin based, I'd recommend heading in to Treacy's to get a professional opinion. They do a lot of fleet work for us and others so have a lot of experience with knackered Passat's.
