Was in Headford on Saturday last and prices were very strong. Having said that though there was no way they were this years weanlings, most of them were last years and registered Jan 2010. Not much sold under 600. Nice continentals around the 350kg mark were makin from 650-750. As for the belgian blues, most of them were startin at the 900 - 1000 mark. They were up on 380-400kg though. So all in all they are going good. If it's like last year few yrs though, prices will take a dip around the mid oct.

literally just in the door from ennis, dropped off a load for my neighbour, had a quick look in the bull ring for 10 minutes and TBH thought it was a sluggish sale, thought the buyers were scarce on the ground but the car park was full... wet day plenty of spectators

Was in Abbeyfeale on Saturday, the bulls were back a bit from earlier show and sales but heifers were on a good enough trade, seemed to be one or two farmers looking for them which didn't sit too well with alot of the usual jobbers who were used to gettting them at their own prices. Like op said the prices tend to drop off around October anyway.

Think I'll hold onto alot of my spring born weanling heifers till next year now, when you see them up against "weanlings" that are at least 12 months its depressing.

A big mart is a bit off putting but you can be sure that all the export men are going to be at a big mart with the double trailer lorries to be filled!

    Van,

Up to a few years ago, I regularily bought stores in Ennis. I always thought they were dearer in Ennis than say Sixmilebridge, which was a smaller mart. You will always have the big buyers at the bigger marts.

Scarriff has switched to saturdays since SMB closed, weanlings and general cattle sale on alternative weeks

was never there but heard it is going fairly well, I believe New port switched to saturday also , a bit close to one another IMO

Was in Roscommon last night and prices were f&%king terrible. The finest of heifers weanlings and yearlings for no more than 500:eek: A 320kg Limousin heifer made only 450. 1 or 2 made about 300 with their weight but other than that it was the worst mart I seen in a while. I hope it's better on saturday when we're selling the heifers.

BB weanlings in Castleisland on Monday last made €2.40/Kg bull or €1.90/Kg for a heifer. These were top quality animals out of ch x lm cows.

Does anyone on here use Loughrea mart or know anything about it?

I have a couple of weinlings to bring there next friday for my inlaws and everything about it puts me off.

I was supposed to bring them last friday, so I tried to book them the monday before (9.30 am on a monday is the advertised time that they start to take phone bookings). I got through at 9.35am and was told that there were 120 lots of bulls booked. i couldn't believe it. I asked how it was booked so fast and the lady told me that they take bookings at any time. So i said I'd book them for this friday coming - the lowest numbers that she had left was 99 and 100. (100 cattle booked 2 weeks before the mart day).

I had hoped to get a lower number because last year when I sold there, I was in the 90's in the bulls and 50's in the heifers. The heifers sold within 2 hours, and after 3 1/2 hours, they had not reached my number in the bulls - it was so frustrating. the auctioneer often stopped for 5 minutes while waiting for a specific number to come up from the lower part of the mart. At 10.30pm, I still hadn't sold and there were about 10 men standing around the ring and maybe 3 of them actively bidding. I sold at 11pm, all but 1 animal - which wasn't suitable for export. Infact, there was not 1 person left to open up bidding on him. There were 40 bulls to be sold after me, but after a couple of failed attempts to try to sell, the auctioneer gave up and declared the sale to be over. Anyone with cattle that were above lot 100 had to bring them home because there were no buyers left. I put a lot of the blame for this on the auctioneer. In any other mart that I have been in, auctioneers can get through 30-40 animals per hour. A lot of the buyers got annoyed with him that evening and just left.

If it were my decision, I would bring them off to another mart - even if I had to drive for an hour to it. But I am only the seller and my inlaws have a gra for Loughrea and remain unconvinced to sell in another mart.

Does anyone know how Loughrea is going lately? I dread to think about the night that I'm going to have to put in next friday. I usually enjoy marts, but I find loughrea a nightmare.

    Thanks Muckit,

I have only been in ballinasloe mart a few times. What day is their weinling sale? I'm stuck with Loughrea this Friday though, but if I have to bring them home I'll be bringing them to Ballinasloe or I might even bring them closer to home like to Elphin or somewhere like that. I hate coming out of a mart and feeling that i was ripped of and the last couple of times I have felt like that.

Anyone know what the roscommon sale was like last night??

Depends on the numbers for the 2 rings to run. The day I was there was only about 20 cows and 40 weanlings so one ring was too much:D
