Wife uses old focus auto, 10 yrs old. Only used as runaround, but has 62k miles on the clock, but, only does about 7k per year now, if that.....

When getting pre mot check, was advised by mechanic of need to replace timing belt, not only due to mileage on clock but also age of car. Quoted circa e350.

    Q is.....are comments valid.

    Thanks

AFAIK the mileage interval on that is 100k miles, but I don't know what the time interval is. If it's over (and it almost certainly is) then i'd replace the TB along with tensioners & water pump. Before doing anything, though - are you sure it hasn't ever been done before?

They usually mark a change of belt with tipp-ex somewhere near the housing.

I wouldn't risk it, that's a limit not a recommendation, the cost of a replacement engine or a rebuild would be considerably more, that little piece of rubber does a pretty important job.

With a timing belt if you have ANY doubt get it changed.

The Focus II of my GF is 100,000 miles or 8 years and I can't see the Focus I being any longer so I'd get it done asap.

Also if it does snap on a motorway there is a very good chance you'll end up in a serious accident, and put other motorists at risk. I know 250 feels like a lot of money but it could end up saving you in more ways than one.

Hi The interval on the Focus is 100k or 10 years so I would get it done asap if its not been done before. I had mine done recently by my local mechanic(works in Ford) for 180 for just the belt and tensioners.
He said unless waterpump is leaking no need to do it as its not a big job on my car(it runs off the altenator I think not t belt). My car is 03 1.8 tdci so not sure if its the same for the petrol engine in relation to water pump set up.

Thanks all. A timing belt it is then......sounds like some room on price though.
