Moving job and no public transport so need to get something to get me too and from work. Not looking for anything fancy (:() will only be doing a 15-20min drive each way and the odd longer trip at the weekend. Dont want a shoe box sized car as i'm tall and may need to put a baby car seat in the back from time to time.
Budget is up to €3kish. Cheap running and reliable.

Currently thinking of a 00-02 Ford Focus
    Any other suggestions?

I'm thinking a larger turbo diesel wouldnt be worth the extra price\tax\insurance?

The Focus is a good choice with a 1.6 engine.
Two of them in my family for a couple of years, never a moments trouble with them ;)

You'd get a very decent 406HDi for €3000, insurance will be no more, tax about €200 more and you'll save a few euro on the diesel over the petrol. Much better car than a Focus.

well a 406 is certainly a suggestion i wasnt expecting! Will have to do a few insurance quotes to see what it works out at.
So ye reckon the increased tax will be recouped on fuel over a smaller petrol car?
