    make/model would help.

but you will just get the answer to shop around a bit first before you do anything.

You'll need to view the service history. These cars need good oil and regular services. Othervise the bottom end of the engine and turbo will not be great and you won't want to know.

    Other things on these are

interior electrics - check everything especially windows
Coilpacks - thay blow coils and spark generators meaning the car misfires or doesn't run at all.
Un-even rear tyre wear - worn trailing arm bushes.

Not a bad car with plenty of shove if the engines right. My da brought 2 of these engines past 150k in passats with little bother. Mk4 golfs are not a paragon of reliability and maintenance on a 10yr old turbo car is always going to be more than a bog standard one.

I'd repeat this with bells on - also make sure (with a reciept) that that timing belt has been done recently - it's an expensive job (I think the engine has to come out) and is critical at the same time.

Are we talking miles or km's on the clock? I know the vag 1.8t is more than capable of going well past 150k miles but I wouldnt want to find out its limits. A little more cash and you could get THIS (haggle!), its been remapped already (which makes the mk4 gti a gti) plus the servicing as mentioned above and some other extras. Otherwise check out forks car too before you agree a sale with anyone.

The remap makes a great straight line car out of them, a mate had a remapped one and it was a very quick car for the money. Still gash in the corners but.

In saying that I always found my Golf Tdi a very comfortable (highline!) and entertaining car and enjoyed owning it.

Check is the suspension has been replaced. At that mileage, all bushings, balljoints, shocks etc. will need to be done if they haven't already. Just replaced the whole lot on my (similar) car and it wasn't cheap!

As above, assure the timing belt has been done, and at that kind of mileage, the last time it was done, it should have had the hydraulic tensioner done at the same time. Sometimes people neglect to do it as the part costs €90, but if it fails, it's game over.

You might be getting a cheap car on the looks of it, but if the suspension/belt need to be done, it's adding another 1000-1250 on to the cost of the car.

The Polo GTi from 2001 used a 1.6 125bhp engine.

Yep, 1.8VVC in the 25, badged a GTi but no turbo. The 1.8K was turbod in some 75s and ZTs but they were not badged GTi.

Bora was available in 1.8T (180bhp ) with identical trim and running gear to the 'GTI' golf,as much as a GTI as the mk4 golf was considering it was a tarnish on the GTI brand.
