Problem with 00 micra

My girlfriend drives a 00 Nissan Micra. It is due to be NCTed in 2weeks.

The past few days she has noticed that the clocks on her dash (the rev counter-speedo-petrol-engine temp) stop working every now and again.

she drives 50 minutes to work and they stop working and all the needles drop to the bottom 4 or 5 times on the way to work. Today they didnt work at all.

We swaped over the clocks from her sisters car which is the same model+year and they seem to work fine. We didnt get to drive it for long though.only up and down the estate a few times.

As the nct is coming up she wants to get the car serviced but she cant afford new parts+service.

Do you think the guys in the nct center will fail her on the clocks not working?

how much will second hand clocks cost from a scrap yard roughly?

The NCT will require that the speedometer and odometer are working correctly and consistently.

The fact that all gauges are intermittent points to a connection or earth fault within the instrument cluster, or a earth connection behind the cluster themselves. Does tapping the cluster cause or cure the fault?

Assuming you are happy that your clock swapping test proves that your cluster is faulty, you could contact an electronic repair centre around town to see if they can repair a dry joing or iffy connection.

No tapping it doesnt do anything. i dont want to buy another one if its not going to solve the problem.
we brought it to a local mechanic and he put a screw on the connection to the battery he said it was a loose connection there....that didnt help.

Well there's your answer in part - if you can successfully drive it for a prolonged period with another cluster then it proves that your original cluster is at fault. Why not put the suspect cluster into the other car and see if the fault moves with it? That will confirm for definite that your cluster is faulty.

Sourcing a set of clocks from a scrap yard means that you will be displaying the mileage on those clocks, and not your original set. That can cause obvious problems, and is why I suggested getting someone handy in electronics to see if they can repair your set for you.

Maybe we will just service the car and use her sisters clocks for the nct. then we can save a few bob up to get the problem fixed.
