Thinking about importing a 2010 520d M sport from the UK. Not really fond of automatics so I'm leaning towards a manual. At the moment they seem to making about €26k - €27k on the used UK BMW site. I'm going to go for one with less than 10k miles and the business eidition with the 19" M alloys. Few questions for anyone that cares to comment...

Should a manual be less or more expensive than auto?

How would a manual affect the resale afterwards, autos seem to be way more popular than manual in 520d.

A friend tells me the price should drop by £1,500 in JAN ? Do people think this is true, or would I be better off waiting until March...

520d in manual will be much harder to sell then the auto in a few years, they are not wanted really. Why do you want a manual ?

Personally, I think the manual box in the 520d is horrible and I would only consider the Auto version. It's going to cost more to VRT as the emissions on the E60 auto put it in to VRT category C.

Pricing between now and January in the UK isn't going to change as they've had the late 10 reg change, and won't change again until March. As they don't change registration in January every year then the actual year is less important than the reg.

Resale on the Auto is going to be better, as the majority of people looking at that type of car (especially the loaded Business Edition models) are looking for Auto's, but the manual won't be too bad because it has really cheap road tax.

What is going to affect the resale value most is that it's a 2010 E60 model, which was replaced shortly after it was sold by the F10.

A £27,000 UK BMW 520d M-Sport Business Edition (first page of the search I did on BMW UK) comes to approximatley €40,000 registered in Ireland, which isn't great value when the new model (manual SE with no nav admittedly) can be bought for not much more.

have you got a link to a car your looking at ?
is it E60 or F10 model?

M-Sport F10 models should be out here within the next few weeks according to guy i know in a main BMW dealer.

Edit - Assuming its an E60 as the M-Sport F10 isint available yet then it would depend on the price of the car as you need to allow alot of depreciation as its the old model. some great info there ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ from ROR.

Was never really a lover of automatics to be honest. Have driven them occassinalyl in the US and just find them very boring to drive. To be fair I've never driven one for long periods.

Diesels work particularly well with automatic gearboxes, and besides the savings in the purchase price by choosing a manual gearbox will be wiped out when you will eventually end up changing the Dual Mass Flywheel.

Auto ftw with diesels, and if it's the new model 520d it is practically as good as the manual for mpg in theory and if you do a lot of motorway driving it is probably a fair bit better because the new model has an 8 speed auto so the revs will be much lower on the motorway, which not only saves fuel but makes it quieter as well.
