Maternity leave job in Sec School. Is contract with school or department of ed?

    I have a maternity leave position that started at the beginning of september. I have not been given a contract yet. Where does your contract come from? Is it the secondary school or the department of education? Thanks.

    I'd be more worried over the fact that they haven't given you your contract yet, and also, why haven't you just asked the principal???!

    Your contract will be with the school for hours granted by the department. The department will pay you fortnightly. This is how it USUALLY works. Your case may be different. You need to knock on the principal's door and ask him/her a few questions.

    Standard in what sense? Maternity leave can differ in length, most teachers will take the full leave but some will take unpaid leave afterwards, some do not.     Standard in what sense? Maternity leave can differ in length, most teachers will take the full leave but some will take unpaid leave afterwards, some do not. You might get the tail end of a maternity leave because somebody else didn't finish it or because the leave was either side of the summer in two different academic years.

    In the sense of starting in september and finishing when the maternity leave is over.

    Well I wouldn't call it standard in any sense. It starts when the maternity leave starts and finishes when the maternity leave finishes. The length of the contract can vary.

    Do you get a written contract and does the contract reflect the expected return of person on maternity leave etc?

    I don't know to be honest, I've never had a maternity contract. I do know that the maternity leaves advertised in the school I work in give an end date. One of them runs from start of school year until sometime in March for example. So the contract would have a definite end I'd imagine.

    I've covered 3-4 maternity leaves at this stage.

    Ive never been given an actual contract, just notification of the start date and the end date.
    There is no actual contract as its not your job. The job belongs to the person out on maternity leave.
    You get paid on an hourly rate for covering her contract until she returns.

    You dont need a contract in this situation tbh although I can understand why you would feel put out without one.

    It is your job in a very specific temporary capacity. It is a fixed term contract and anyone working anywhere is entitled to a contract of employment under labour law, even a person covering maternity leave. If you don't get a contract how are you supposed to know exactly what you are supposed to be doing? It can stipulate in the contract that you get paid the hourly rate. If they are only paying you week to week for what you envisage to be a six month position, what is to stop them showing you the door midway through the leave if the principal's niece shows up looking for work??

    I agree with you.
    but what should happen and what happens in reality are two very different things.
    my job description was discussed at length and my starting and end dates were also given to me.
