Is there any app that tracks your GPS movements without using data? I will be renting a plane in Florida and want to track my flights on Google earth. So ideally, turn the app on when flying, then once I get back upload to computer and display on google earth?!

Mapdroyd maybe, not sure if it'd work while flying though. Depends on where you'll be flying I guess.

Any of the fitness based apps should do the job. Have a look at this thread.

latitude won't do the job because it only updates when it has internet connection (and you won't have that on a plane).

can you let us know how you get on with the fitness apps? i'm interested to see.

    thanks

Orux Maps might do what you want. I've been using it for recording tracks for hill-walking and boating. It's very configurable, and you can set it up to use online or offline maps. The tracks it records can be exported GPX or KML.

Not relevant to your question, but a really nice feature worth mentioning, is that you can create your own maps (map scans, aerial photos from the web etc) and use them for navigation on the phone.

On the Legend, and I assume a standard approach to Android platforms, flight mode disables GPS as well as other cellular/wireless traffic, so I'm guessing it wouldn't matter if the app could log without a data connection, it probably won't even have GPS!

Edit : Just noticed you're renting the plane yourself, there won't be any air stewards asking you to turn on flight mode so.....

GPS receivers can legitimately be used on a plane after takeoff and before landing and yes, you can turn on the GPS in airplane mode. Of course all that is moot, if it's a private flight. GPS receivers only receive signals, they don't transmit,

My tracks will, I used it cycling, you turn off the map and set it to log. If you turn the map back on, it will show you the route you took, but obviously use data to show you the map.

I tried to use a GPS speed measurement tool on my Desire on a plane and the GPS would not work.

I read after that GPS is limited to ground use only for civilian devices.

I have used consumer GPS devices during flights many times. You would have to hold it close to the window for a considerable length of time to get a signal. Also don't expect any form of assisted GPS support.
