    Hey guys,

I'm struggling to find any decent information with search but when is the Apple TV released here (or at least somewhere where we can access it easily enough like the UK?)?

It looks pretty nifty, especially once other TV networks get added. I'd like to assume that most networks will eventually sign up, even HBO?

    Cheers

Its released already; just not in stock. You can order it on apple.com and it says 2-3 wks shipping time.

I don't think the rental stuff announced for the new Apple TV works outside of the states.

Is there any store that sell Apple TV or is it only online I can buy it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,498 ✭✭✭wayne040576

You have to order it through the apple store site for now. Mine is due to ship Friday with expected delivery of next Tuesday. If you want to wait until then to get my verdict.

You can rent the tv shows if you set up a Us iTunes account.

If you register a US account then you can use rentals. It's easy enough - www.patphelan.net has a posting on it. You'll need to service the account using gift cards.

    It does work.

Ya I have an American account but the Apple store says shipping in 2-3 weeks which is a bit crazy. Just wondered was there any Apple resellers that had them in store.

CompuB said they were getting some this week - the Cork store at least.

    So I got mine yesterday.
First thing, it's small, really small. I knew from the articles that it was supposed to be small but I wasn't expecting this. Its L X W are only about 60% the size of a cd case.

Overall I'm a bit disappointed. Even with a US account the amount of content is not great. I was hoping to be able to rent some TV shows but none of the shows I was buying on the old model are available.

Everything else is pretty much the same. One strange thing, I'm finding the remote a little annoying to use. I keep pressing the enter button when navigating left/right.

Have you tried, with any success, renting a film and streaming it directly using Apple TV?

I rented a tv show yesterday and it worked ok. But I have a 20 - 30 meg UPC line.

I tried mine for the first time last night and it streamed a standard movie ok over a 3MB dsl line, starting within 30 secs. I tried previewing some HD movies, but it was cruelly slow...I suspect I would be 1 - 2 hours waiting for it to start.

I'll have another look at it later, but I think if I was going to rent a HD movie I'd download it to iTunes first and then stream it across from there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭ashleey

You can't rent hd films via iTunes unfortunately. Looks like a 3 mb line is only ok for sd films then. Thanks for everyone's advice

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭ashleey

I just tried to watch an hd trailer of an 'In Theaters' film and it just sat in loading. It seems that the system builds a buffer of at least 3 mins although probably longer. For HD this is too much for a standard Irish 3mb line. I switched off HD in options and tried the same trailer in SD. It started within 30 secs. Broadband anyone?

Hi guys, maybe a quick help -

I just bought apple tv and I want to hook it up to my stereo. My stereo inputs are either

    -3.5mm Headphone jack
    - RCA inputs (i.e the red and white cables)

Can anyone suggest how I can hook my Apple TV which has an optical audio out to my receiver.

    Thanks alot

I'm kind of toying around with getting an apple tv myself, but I have one question.

Can it be used like a network drive to playback avi's saved to my pc hard drive on the tv, or are there issues with divx/xvid encoded video files. ?

    Thanks.

    it wont do avi

unless to reencode your files to apple supported file format

So I'm looking to get one of these.

If I buy one in America, will it be OK to use in Ireland?

How are the movie rentals on it?

Has it got a goodly amount of movies to rent on an Irish iTunes account?

Yes, it works fine in Ireland . . but for movie rentals, you should definitely open a US itunes account (there are plenty of links on here that explain how)

    Thanks for that.

I was looking at an ebay listing form an American seller was going to work out at €86 delivered but it has since expired :(.

To the guys that have a US iTunes account.

When you get iTunes gift cards off eBay, how do you get the redemption code?

Does the seller mail the card to you or do they email the code?

Great news. You can now install a Plex client on a jailbroken apple tv gen 2.

Currently only applicable for mac users. Download Plex for OS X from www.plexapp.com. Plex will download metadata for your stored movies (avi etc). It is a media server which the Plex client on a jailbroken Apple tv can connect to.

I believe a windows version of the media server is due in the near future.

This news made me buy an apple tv. Highly recommended.

    Thanks.

Got my Apple TV on Friday, ordered Toshlink and Toshlink to Coaxial converter (no free optical connections left on the amp).

Cable and converter came today but missed the postie...blah:(

Anywho setup a US iTunes account and ordered a $15 iTunes gift card of eBay...awaiting email of redemption code.

Can't wait to get it all setup.:D

Cool, have you tried it yet? Can it stream from NAS drives?

Are the previews in 5.1 surround sound for the HD content?

Yep have it working. Few bugs like no fast forward. But the client is still only a proof of concept at the moment.

Yes for NAS. I have a AFP NAS. In the media server manager on the Mac I just point to the NAS and it serves all the media to the Apple TV client.

Unfortunately yes. There wouldn't be enough processing power in the apple tv to play HD files. I have my iMac running as a home server anyway so no issue.

I'm getting a login error trying to sign in to my YouTube account. It's telling me that the login details are wrong.

I don't want to sound smart but did you try re-inputting your details ?

When I first got the apple tv I regularly made annoying mistakes by accidentally depressing the select button when meaning to use the right-arrow.

Did something change today? I tried it last night and still the same problem.

I wonder if it's because I have my YouTube and Google accounts linked?

Mine didnt work the day i got it, and the next day it just started working. Meh.

I unlinked my youtube account from my google account but it made no difference.

Oh well at least I can still stream from my iP4 youtube app.

No point calling Apple support I guess as I'm using a US iTunes account on my Apple tv.

    YouTube problem solved.

It twigged when I entered my details for my Irish iTunes account and it came up with the same error.

I was using the remote app, for some reason password input doesn't seem to be recognised. Used the remote and it worked.

Was perusing the movies on the Irish account and was surprised to find that some new movies like Avatar are available on it but not the American one.
