htc desire gone wrong

    hi there,

i have a htc desire. it was bought on o2 ireland. it was unlocked when i bought it. it came with the 2.1 software on it.

i followed a guide initially from http://hoz.id.lv/o2-ireland-de-branding-and-froyo but have since done all sorts of messing around with it

when i installed the 2.2 update the device kept rebooting constantly after giving me the force quit / wait error message for the "system" process everytime i booted.

i've tried a couple of other things since, a long list of messed up methods which i should really have put more thought and effort into.

as i stand now i have a htc desire which boots up but is very unresponsive when it does. i can't actually run anything on it. i can't drag down the notifications menu. i can't access the applications list. i can go into menu > settings > about phone and have this under software information:
    android version: 2.2
    baseband version: 32.36.00.28u_4.06.00.02_2
    kernel version: 2.6.29-0cb9f166 htc-kernal and18-2 #1
    build number: 2.10.405.2 cl226611 release-keys
    software number: 2.10.405.2
    browser version: webkit 3.1

so the phone as it stands is not usable. it also randomly reboots itself.

i want to get this phone back working again. ideally i'd like the generic / unbranded 2.2 software on it but if i can even just get it back to the o2 ireland 2.1 then i'll be happy with that so i can follow the o2 ireland upgrades from there (typically they bring them out a day or two later!)

can anyone please help me out? please let me know what other information you might need.

this is the error that keeps popping up
    Sorry!
    Process system is not responding.
    | Force close | Wait |

when i hold down the volume down button when booting i get this info too if this helps any

The O2 forum discussed custom and stock roms recently at the below link, but I don't believe that the 2.1 O2 branded software is available anywhere online yet.

i'll have a look at that link. i guess i'm lacking a basic understanding of some of the fundamentals at this stage.

if i can't get o2 ireland 2.1 back on the phone then i'm going to need a goldcard for any updates i do, is that right?

also - i have no idea where i stand in terms of boot settings and rom's at the moment.

That's right, any updates you do make sure you have the goldcard in the phone for them.

It is tricky getting up and running the first time but once you keep it basic (ie stock rom, not custom and try to avoid heavy/bloated homescreen apps/widgets) then you should have no problems :)

once i make a goldcard once - is it a goldcard forever?
will formatting it on the phone make a difference?
should i be able to use the inbuild updater to get 2.2 if i have the goldcard in and 2.1 on the phone?

all i want is a generic working 2.1 software that i can upgrade to 2.2 using the phone software or else a generic working 2.2.

afaik once it is a goldcard it will stay a goldcard, as in making a goldcard doesn't involve writing files to it etc so farmatting should not make a difference. but i could be corrected in that tbh.

Once you have the goldcard in the phone and you are on a stock 2.1 then you can update to 2.2 when the update is available (which it should be straight away).

You can get a generic 2.2 htc update here, but updating from 2.1 works just as well --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=725966

I'm not certain, but accepting OTA updates once your phone is rooted COULD possibly cause you to loose your root, but that doesn;t really matter to you from what I can see from your posts. I'm not entirely sure about that though. A quick PM to one of the usual heads around here should sort that out for ya. Also, I saw a thread here the other day that mentioned that constant rebooting like you've described could be a symptom of a failing motherboard. Again, a bit of research is required to truly be able to pin it down.
Head over to the xda developers forum and have a browse there to see if you can get any other info on it.

Random, did you have a goldcard in the phone when trying the updates?
I had your symptoms when I updated without the goldcard.
You could try the generic WWE Rom 21 or 22 with the gc in the device and then reroot. That's what I did after I figured out my mistake.

Talking to a guy who had his Desire wrecked by an OTA update from O2.
Doubt it was rooted. It's stuck on the splash screen now.

i managed to get it working after trying numerous different options. some random zipped up rom got it working in the end via the recovery console. seem to have 2.2 generic running now but concerned about any ota updates coming up.

2.2 generic is fine for ota updates as long as you have a goldcard as your SD card.
If you root and then get an ota update, it will most likely remove root but leave the su application.

Random, I seem to have problems similar to you. What exact rom did you use in the end?

Will check when i get home and let you know

no need Random - what worked for me was a factory reset. I saw elsewhere online that some guy did this and it worked. So I'm happy out now.
