Student Card Question

Can you get your student card while waiting on the grants dept to approve your reg fees? I'm doing nursing & you can't get upstairs in the nursing building without a swipe card or into the library.
We were told at orientation that confirmation was needed and that some grants depts had delays, surely there aren't a load of students with no card because of delays? :(

I registered today and they said I wont have a student card until I hand in a letter confirming that im getting the grant =/

Means I cant use library etc. Fairly annoying.

Did they give you a registration letter? I need a reg letter for my BTEA but I assumed that I wouldn't get it without the reg fees letter.

What council are you applying to? I rang mine & told them the restrictions I am experiencing as a result of the delays. They tried to fob me off with "everyone'e in the same boat" but I told them that I know students in DIT, Trinity & UCD who are not experiencing any restrictions. They said I was being put to the top of the list but it will still be Friday before I get a letter from them.
Maybe you could ring your grants dept & explain it to them, they might do the same for you.

Co.Dublin VEC is the one I applied to. Im going to ring them in the morning and hopefully they can fast track my application. Did they confirm over the phone that you were actually getting the grant ? The only thing Ive heard from them is that my application is being processed. When did you apply, out of interest ?

I applied on 4th or 5th of August to get in before the LC students & they told me that my application was in the pile to be assessed in 6 weeks time!!! I applied to Co. Dublin VEC last year, they were very helpful. I hope you have some success talking to them tomorrow.

They never said that I was approved, they just popped me to the top of the list for assessment. Last year when I applied to Co. Dublin VEC they did tell me over phone that I was within the income limits & that I would get a grant. I hope they tell you that too tomorrow.

I did the tour of the library & I'm pretty sure that they said that if you were waiting on your student card you could use the library but not rent books. I'm really annoyed that I cant get upstairs in the nursing building or get a locker. I will look like a loon waiting for someone to swipe open the door for me.

Co Dublin VEC *is* working incredibly hard to get the grants all finished, I know cause my Dad is a Youth Officer in the Dublin VEC, and sometimes is around the office where the grants are being processed.

They are lovely people, usually very helpful and they are trying to get them all done as soon as possible, so please be patient when you talk to them :) There are an awful lot of ye to go through :)

Thats great that I should be able to use the library. Can i use the wifi with the username and password that Ive got aswell ? I only got my application in a couple of weeks ago unfortunately.

I thought you only needed your student number to get a locker? Although I suppose you do have to prove it's *your* student number. But if you were in a rush to get a locker or wanted to make sure you got a good one it might be worth bearing in mind... -curious now-

WiFi doesn't need a user/pass combination, just need to set the proxy and you're good to go.

Unless they've changed it within the past two weeks...

I cant get through to the co.dub VEC grant office. Very frustrating. Just a recorded message saying they are busy and to call back later. No option to hold or anything. Been trying since 9a.m

Cool, what is the proxy info ?

My grants dept only open their phone lines on Wednesday so I'll try ringing again in the morning. The wifi can be set up by the IT guys I think in the library. I've to get them to set my DCU mail as my default email on my iphone, I can't seem to do it myself.

I got a locker today, you go to the security office in the multi storey car park & they give them to you for €10. No student card or number needed. There were no questions asked at all. Just "€10 please" :D

How do you get up without it? The stairs by reception & by the canteen have a door at the top that requires a swipe through. I realised today that I can walk through HG20 to get upstairs.

It's the other way around, I can get up to the classrooms upstairs but the hall with the wards is locked & can only be accessed with a card. It's a pain because I'm up there every Thursday & have to follow people up.

I have been given verbal confirmation from my council but I'm not sure how much that will do for me before they send me my letter.
