Is there a way to restore it and stay at 4.0.1?

you can download the 4.01 firmware (or browse your computer for it), then click shift-restore and point to that file.

no no - you can \ONLY restore to 4.0.1 if you've saved shsh blobs before 12th August 2010. This has been discussed at length here

Did you try connecting to iTunes?

Since you were already jailbroken you probely should have your shsh files saved on Cydia, you can then point at cydia and do your restore to 4.01.
Do you know if you had your's backedup on cydia?

the same thing has been happening quite often with my iPhone 4. I have to reinstall ultrasn0w each time to fix it and it works perfectly again

Ok so what I did was connected to iTunes got the message you need to restore your iPhone to 4.1. So I hit ok restore iPhone when the iPhone started up I hit cancel restore.

It worked phone started up put in vf sim I'm still on 4.0.1 went to jailbreakme.com all is well again may be I just got lucky.I don't care as it worked!
