American Wedding - Wear the usual Suit?

    Hi,

I'm going to a wedding in New York in a couple of weeks and am wondering if the guys wear the full suit to an American wedding like they do here - if anyone has been to one in that part of the world, can you let me know?

It's a church ceremony with a cocktail reception in a hotel afterwards.

    Thanks!

    hey,

First I would check what the invite says! It could say formal, or smart casual or black tie or something to give you a hint!

I went to a wedding in San Francisco last year, irish guy, American girl. There was no indication on the invites for dress code so we went with what I think is the norm for Ireland and did cocktail dresses and suits with ties.

all the irish there ended up being a bit over dressed! It was a normal church and dinner wedding but the bridesmaids wore flip flops! Other guests at our table just wore trousers and a casual check shirt, women wore nice dresses, noone in jeans tho.

Think San Francisco is a little different to New York tho!

    Hope that helps a little!

I actually run a small wedding photography studio in New York so maybe I can help. Basically weddings here are the same as in Ireland in terms of dress. Even at relatively informal garden weddings (which are quite common here) you would be expected to wear a nice suit.

The only differences I've noticed between here and Ireland is that it's relatively rare for the groom's party in New York to do the full morning wear thing (tails, cumerbunds, etc) and it also seems more rare over here for women to wear hats.

On a broader level American weddings are often shorter affairs than Irish ones, its quite common to have evening weddings for instance where the ceremony might be at 7 PM or so and the reception would wrap up around midnight. Hardly any time to get locked at all!
