Talking to yourself - RTE radio

There was an interesting item on John Murray's programme on RTE radio 1 this morning around 9:27 am.

A psychologist was explaining how we can use self talk to help us stick to plans and achieve goals, and avoid getting distracted.

It's worth a listen - I haven't searched for a link as it's probably not up on the web yet.

I started to sneer when he described a "getting fit" aspiration as walking three times a week- but then I told myself to cop on...ba-doom-tish!

Seriously though, I heard a bit of this, worth a listen. Doubt I'm the only one who audibly curses at his weak self in training.

And be careful to say "Hurry the Flip Up" when powerwalking past schools.

I used to try this, but I kept getting in blazing rows with myself.

I usually self talk on runs, it goes something like this,

Good me: Oh this is a lovely 20 mile training run for DCM
Bad me: Are you mad lets get the fck home order some pizza, crash out on the couch and watch some Eastenders
Good me: Don't listen to him think of how good you will feel after the run
Bad me: Special on in Four Star Pizza....nom nom nom

At least it passes the time on my runs:rolleyes:

As Einstein might have said, "it's all relative".

Back in my competitive cycling days, I remember almost choking on my coffee as I read about someone telling how tough the life of a premiership footballer was - "sometimes we have to train for two hours in one day".

I reckon I could put up with it for £50k - per year!

The overall message was still useful. I thought he was particularly good when he pointed out that most of us would avoid anybody who constantly undermined us verbally telling us we were no good etc, and yet many of us carry such a person inside our head.

Its funny you know I can hold two internal converations whilst running, one with myself which generally goes something like "Easy Tiger and don't stop, don't stop you old Bastid!" and the other with God...

After asking how his day is going it quickly decends into something along the lines of "Please God I think I'm going to die and let this be over soon"

Thankfully it doesn't happen every race, but on several occasions I've experienced my internal chatter changing from "I think I'm going to die" to "oh sh1t, I actually am dying!":D

Ah nothing wrong with a good old chat with yourself...its when you start answering yourself back is the time to get worried:D

If it doesn't happen in every race then you're not running hard enough in some of your races ... ;)

    Sad but true, TFB.

Ironically one of the few races where I did manage to really suffer, I ran my slowest ever marathon. On that occasion I felt I actually had died and been reincarnated as a ninety year old with dodgy legs.:D

Seriously, it's one area where I know there's huge scope for improvement.
