NCT Query

    Hi all.

Dont know if this is right forum so sorry if its not.

Recently i was stopped at a checkpoint and told to pull over because my NCT was out of date.

After going through the usuals with the garda she asked what the story was with the NCT. I stupidly said it was booked and picked a random date out of my head. ( Its not booked ) She then said to produce the cert to the garda station of my choice within 10 days of the day i had said, pass or fail.

Now i have tried to book the test since but they are booked out.

I have yet to receive a letter from the NCT saying my car is due a test and the NCT has been out for 6 months. Does this mean i am not legally bound to be tested?

    Suggestions and comments please.

    Thanks.

it doesn't matter whether you have a letter from the nct or not. it's up to you to make sure you have valid nct / tax / etc.

i can't help with the other. not many suggestions really beyond come clean with the garda.

You lied and said it was booked. It was not. You got caught. Not many options left open. I supposed you could try to say you had to cancel that date due to an emergency of some sort. Know any1 that died or is dieing?

    Meh

Honestly you won't find much sympathy seeing as you didn't bother to book an nct in the first place. Yet you're the kind of person who prob moans that it takes so long to get a booking.

Oh and the NCT do not have to send a letter. It's been this way for quite a while now that no letters get sent. You are of course legally bound to have it tested. That piece of paper in the window should be enough of a reminder. If it's a first NCT you should have checked the log book in the first place to see when it was due like any normal person would.

    Hi SD1990,

I've done some work for the NCT before. The letters are not always automatically sent out, its the car owners responsibility to make sure the car has a cert.

What I would suggest you do is go to your local NCT center and explain the situation about the guards ,be nice :D. Ask them to give you a call if there are any No Shows, they should able to accommodate you :)

Or go to one of the centres early on a Saturday/Sunday (or any day you have off work).

Go to the desk first thing and say you would like to wait there until a cancellation or no show happens. Bring a packed lunch, and be prepared to wait all day.

It's a lot better than pissing off the Garda you have lied to.

Phone them first thing in the morning and ask for a cancellation, the centres are not allowed to make bookings, they can only be done via the call centre.

Also, be aware that you can book the test up to 6 months in advance for the first test, and three months for subsequent tests, there is really no excuse not to have it done on time.

What can the Garda actually do if you don't have a valid NCT cert?
Are points on your license a possibility?

As others have said, ring and look for cancellations. Widen your scope to look at other centres nearby (in fact, anything within reasonable driving distance). Explain your circumstances to the booking clerk, they might take some sympathy on you.

You probably will get lucky - but you need to keep trying.

The centres can take bookings, i have done it many times in naas, and a few times in fonthill for both full tests and retests. Ask for the manager, explain your situation and he should help ya out. what is your local NCT centre?

Get a booking for anywhere, any date. Once you have that you can look out for a cancellation at your local centre. Put a bit of time into this and you'll have a test within a couple of days.
