Just been noticing that all the sport that is on Sky, they only mention HD channels, just like its not on normal SD but HD only, Like the Ryder cup, Champions league coming up! They dont say "You'll see it live on sky sports 2 and sky sports 2 HD", just Sky sports 2 HD

They want you to sign up to HD, quite simply! They do it on all their channels which have HD versions.

Indeed:D Just like hearing a bad song often enough that you might eventually get to like it:D. And there's no-one better than Sky for flooding you with adverts, promos, junk mail etc, etc. In a peculiar kind of way you'd have to admire their marketing strategies:)

Yeah, they used to promote a programme as being ''on Sky Sports 1 and HD1''. Now it's ''on Sky Sports HD1 and Sky Sports 1''!

Well this round of weekend adverts only mentioned the sport HD channels, nothing about the SD channels.

Yes it seems sky really are pushing the HD extra sub big time, Problem is (As ive found out) is that you'd be surprised how many peoplethat only have CRT with scart only connection Tv's!

What's the chances they'll start showing events (like a premiership game) in HD only - to try force people to upgrade?

They wouldn't be allowed to do that.

    Why?

Why wouldn't they be allowed to do that? For starters the Premier League didn't introduce HD specific rights that would mean games could not be shown on standard definition.

Something like this will only happen when Sky start to shut down their standard definition services.

when are they going to switch the HD channels to 401-406?

Presumably, when there are more HD subscribers than SD subscribers, or else when close to that mark

IMO, they need to offer more incentive for HD, like say Sky world customers get the HD sub free or something, or else cut the HD sub to €10 or something.

I don't see it happening in the short term. They would annoy:

    - The large number fans who have paid out good money for Sky Sports would be rather annoyed if events started to become exclusive to Sky Sports HD this early (and HD is still in early adopter territory people, no matter how much Sky plug it).
    - The FA Premier League would be unlikely to be pleased as punch (although then again, they are the ones that sold the rights initially to an embroynic Sky Sports way back in 1992).
    - The clubs themselves and the sponsors who trade on TV exposure.

(The BBC would probably be very happy though as Match of the Day's audience would soar...)

Agreed that this is far into the future before it happens. When Sky Sports rebranded last year, they made a conscious branding decision to promote the HD versions over the SD ones, but until I see BARBs that say otherwise, the SD versions are still the majority watched channels (and Sky will NOT swap the EPG arrangements for Sky Sports and Sky Sports HD until the advertisers are happy for them to do it.)

Not to mention the fact Sky Sports (SD) is sold to cable providers. I would doubt the likes of Virgin Media or UPC, etc would be too happy.

Its the "What a week" adverts on SKy Sports that seems to advertise this weeks sports action is only on Sky Sports HD. No mention of normal Sky Sports.

I forgot to mention of course, the commercial customers would be up in arms. There are still very few pubs that have Sky Sports HD, at least in my area. I'm not sure HD is any benefit with front projection television systems (which a lot of pubs have) anyway - there is one particular pub I know where they got HD and replaced the projection system with a huge (and I mean HUGE) flatscreen - but I doubt many pubs can afford that in this climate.

Ofcom would also be down on them like a ton of bricks after the "debundling" decision earlier this year that affected Sky Sports 1 & 2, whose SD versions are now available on Top Up TV and BT Vision.

Virgin Media do carry Sky Sports 1 & 2 in HD, but not 3, 4 or SSN (SD only).

Sky Sports promoting HD content over SD is simply classic marketing. The only place you can get the full HD Sky Sports service is with Sky, and that's what they're looking to emphasise.
