Looking at the next car I'll be buying in Spring/Summer and wondering if anyone has any experience of the S-Type R? Most likely late 2002 model. I've heard mixed reports of early S-Types, but nothing on the R.

Supposed to be a pretty damn good car by all accounts. Their launch coincided with the much improved and updated S-type, which had improvements to both chassis and interior.

The VRT on them is absolutely ridiculously cheap, and even over here they seem to go for cheap enough(all things considered). With the possible new exorbitant tax rates in the UK on high polluting cars, hoping prices will drop to ~£5,500 or so.

They all got a fantastic review by Clarkson on Top Gear. Lovley car imo. They are so rare over here thats why the vrt is so cheap..

I drove this one once and I loved it, it's a lot younger than the one you're looking at but I'd say it would still be good. Weird looking at the front but a bloody nice car to drive

Epic car for A4 money. Shame the tax is so dear. I would gladly sacrafice a few pissups during the year to have it over a A4.. Actually Downeys are lovely people to deal with I know them they are nice people..

I had a good 50 kms spin in one a few years ago and was really impressed. Steers and stops a lot better than the image would suggest. Fast too.

Budget will be 10k max! The 2.7diesel is meant to be amazing, but for not much more road tax and an awful lot cheaper to buy > 4.2 supercharged 400bhp v8 wins for me :)

Plus it's british, and I have a think for british cars.

Its a good car, especially the R. The only thing missing is a limited slip diff.

The 4.2 V8 was introduced in early 2002, and the car had a major facelift in 2004. Great engine and well set up.

I'd buy as new as you can afford, and certainly only 2001 onwards (nikasil issue until late 2000).

Check all electronics, tyres (even wear), brakes, chassis etc carefully as parts are not cheap.

    Good luck!

Hmmm...I'm pretty sure the major facelift came in 2002 (thorough mechanical and interior overhaul). The one in 2004 was mainly cosmetic and included the introduction of the twin turbo V6 diesel engine.
