I'm sure there's a few threads on this but I couldn't find what I was looking for feel free to point me at older threads.

I currently have a 360 but I'm considering purchasing a PS for exclusive titles.

But besides the exclusives what are other good reasons for to buy a PS when one owns a 360?

    Fan boys, have fun ;)

Blu-Ray. If your ever going to use it.
I have both, my ps3 is purely used as a media device. IMO its a better media player than the xbox.
Xbox is much better for gaming.

It can play Blue Ray (Thats Blue Ray now) movies and also if you download movies to your computer they can be streamed wirelessly to tv through the PS3:D

PS3 = Blueray player + good console for offline play.
XBOX = The best online gaming console available.

So, it basically falls into whether you are going to spend a lot of time playing games online or not.
If answer is yes, get the xbox.

I was in exactly the same position as you last November and went ahead and picked up a second hand 60GB with backwards compatibility. For starters, the exclusives alone make the console worth picking up, there really are some fantastic games on the platform. BC is also a bonus should that be your cup of tea and should you be able to get your hands on one from a store with a warranty. Finally there's the Bluray which is as useful as you want it to be.

The fact that the base PSN is also free can be a bonus but it's not really useful if you do most of your gaming on the 360. That being said, it's nice to be able to jump online with the exclusives. :)

I'd agree with this. PS3 is used for blu-rays, watching videos off external drive or occasionally browsing through photos through the card reader. In terms of games it gets light usage, last one was God of War 3 which was excellent but not enough to make me go out and buy one.

Xbox live can't be beaten really, it's rock solid (my brother has played COD and PES on each and the difference is night and day) and a better supported service. A classic case of getting what you pay for.

I wouldn't be buying it as a games machine. I have it and use it for blu rays and streaming all the time, very handy and very good for that, but I own a total of zero PS3 games and the last one I played was God of War 3.

There are good games, don't get me wrong, but I prefer the Xbox controller and most people I know have the Xbox so it's better for multiplayer for me.

Both have their good and bad points, I traded in my 360 to get a ps3 cos at the time there was more stuff on the ps3 I was interested in, MGS4, Uncharted, and with Heavy Rain and GOW 3 coming out I went with that. There hasnt been much in the past year on 360 only thats made me miss the console a lot, I'll pick one up again when Gears 3 comes out and I do want to play Reach but for now the ps3 is my pick. ITs worth having for Uncharted 2 and GOW (thats God not Gears :pac:)

I own both, and think both are equally worthy.

The benefits of a PS3 over a 360 (note I'd also think the 360 has many benefits over a PS3 though!):

Exclusives: The Uncharted series, Demon's Souls, Valkyria Chronicles, Yakuza, Heavy Rain etc... There are a number of unique series on the console, and ones that tend to differ from the 360 exclusive fare of shooters like Halo and GoW.

PSN exclusives: There are also loads of downloadable games on PSN that are worth picking up. Stuff like Flower (which is just amazing), Pixeljunk series (especially Shooter), Critter Crunch.

    Blu-Ray: Because high-def is pretty.

Japanese stuff: This is what makes the console for me - easy access to the Japanese PSN store (glorious PS1 schmups!), and loads of Japanese exclusives. If you're into JRPGs and the like, the PS3 is a good choice.

As I said, there are plenty of things I prefer on 360 - more multimedia options, Xbox Live, many equally good exclusives. But I'm delighted with both, and honestly if you're a serious gamer having both under your TV will only work to your advantage :)

I would have to disagree.. From owning about 5 360s over time I think the ps3 online service beats xbox live.. Its way better organised than the xbox dashboard and a hell of a lot easier to use.. Also the fact that you HAVE to buy a sub to play online i find ridiculous and you dont get much more than what PSN offers which is all free :D..

Anyways thats just what I think.. If xbox had free online it would beat PSN

Simply not true there is only one difference between the online play on both and that is that xbox live costs you money.

    Easy :)

There's an awesome second Vanquish demo up on there at the moment. It can be hard to navigate the store - you kind of just have to guess - but there are riches galore, including an absolutely spectacular PS1 classics section. You obviously have to pick games that don't require much in the way of language, but pick up some PSN points off ebay or somewhere and you're laughing.

The poster said online gaming console, so I can assume you're responding to that comment rather than strictly online play. In this case, I'll once again post this quote which shows that the two are not the same feature wise...
I noticed some of my friends were online so I joined their party for a quick chat as I was finishing off a level of Afro Samurai while they were playing Red Dead Redemption. We caught up over the next 10mins and, after finishing the level I was on in Afro, we decided to play some Bad Company 2 together. I started up the game, sent them some invites as they were finishing up in RDR and we then created a squad from the guys in our party and played for a few hours.

Later, one of the guys mentioned that Mega Man 10 was in the Deal Of The Week so I dropped out, checked the latest Game Demos available and grabbed the Trial version quickly. It looked great and was 50% off so I grabbed it just before the guys re-invited me back into the game from the party I was still in. They also mentioned that the Summer Of Arcade is starting with even more sweet games coming out.

Now, what console am I talking about?
As many people have said, in terms of actual online performance there is very little difference between both platforms however they are not the same feature wise.

@gizmo That just wouldn't satisfy me for lashing out 60euro for a year sub.. Heck PSN + offers FREE games rather than getting a half price discount on a few xbox games.. To me the only difference is the voice chat between 2 games but thats not much of a big deal..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 578 ✭✭✭Predator_

Ive got both and prefer the ps3. xbox live is overrated, ps3 online is just as good bar in party chat, but I never use chat anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,347 ✭✭✭✭Grayditch

The fact that PSN is free has never really made me turn on my heels about paying for Xbox Live. It's just a bonus that PSN is free, but Xbox Live is still worth it.

Well, it's worth the €35 I pay, anyway. Getting it for €35 euro would make me think about ever paying €60 again!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,959 ✭✭✭rizzla

Yeah it's worth it, you've got a tonne of PS3 exclusives to play which is worth the price.

However after doing all that I don't play any games on it now, much prefer the xbox controller. I do use it alot for blu-rays. Only game I'm currently only looking forward to is Infamous 2 now though.

I also don't see why there's this xbox live bashing. It seems irrelevant to the question.

Well firstly, no one in their right mind pays €60 for a sub when it can be gotten for around €40 from most online retailers.

Secondly, you're not getting Free games with PSN+, that's what you're paying the sub for (as the PA guys amusingly pointed out :p), on top of the fact you still won't own them. That being said it is certainly nice to be getting that facility and it'd be great if something similar was adopted on Live in the future.

If the above price isn't worth it to you then fine but there is a large number of people who do think it's definitely it, especially when it works out at a little over €3 per month. The point still stands however, the feature set between the two platforms differs and claiming to the contrary is simply incorrect.

Anyway this is waaaaaay off-topic, the OP already knows the advantages of XBL and will be able to enjoy the benefits of free PSN when he gets his PS3, which he most certainly should. :)

I've got both. I play most single player stuff on PS3, and a fair bit of media streaming etc. It's a good console. I like having the 360 for multiplayer, and this bit is personal perspective, but my 360 FEELS like it's wheezing a bit. I dunno, I might be imagining it.

Both are great in their own way.

Blu-Ray is a great bonus with the PS3. Some great exclusive games too. Heavy Rain, Uncharted etc.

The one thing I don't like about the PS3 having owned a 360 first is the controller but that's nit picking.

Both have/will have a motion peripheral.

Not a whole lot to choose from imo. Both are exceptionally good consoles.

    X Box has better Graphics.

But the only thing Play Station Has that I would love to play and haven't is Metal Gear Solid.

    Uncharted does look very cool

Now saying that they both have overheating problems.

Xbox was the lead development platform for most games that were released on both, as it is somewhat easier to program. PS3 is more powerful, but harder to get to do what you want. As people are getting more used to it, they're making more impressive strides with the PS3. I could see it overtaking the 360 soon, in terms of overall performance on games. It definitely hasn't yet.

PS3 has had nowhere near the overheating problem of the 360, although the overheating seems to be going down as an issue.

    PS3 is much quieter.
