Omniplex won't accept my ID card!

So I went to the cinema (omniplex) in Tralee last night with my boyfriend, he goes to CIT and they accepted his ID card but not mine! She said that it was because mine didn't have an expiry date! She was an old cow in all fairness and made out that I had made my ID card myself and that it was fake and recommended that I "try getting a new one". I only collected it last week and got discounts in all the galway shops with it. I'm a first year by the way, are our ID cards different to the other years? I heard that this ID will do me for my entire course? What should I do?

My boyfriend had a similar problem in the Eye Cinema... because he got his picture taken at college last year for his ID, the quality was really bad. Then because of the new style of cards (with bigger pictures) this year, they just stretched it & it looks comical... The guys working there took some convincing to believe that it was actually him, and only because he had his other ID from last year! It's a bit ridiculous if you ask me!

But my pictue is perfect, she was arguing over the fact that it had no expiry date so it wasn't valid....

    Brilliant!
Those ID cards are stupid. No - it's not that you're a first year - all registerers(?) this year get the same ones.
The idea was that the card would last for the duration of your degree, but you have to pay 30e for a new one as opposed to 13 or whatever it was.
Not that they're any stronger - I found the old ones broke after about a year of use, and I'm sure these will too.
The lack of date was always going to be a problem - people going in looking for discounts after they've graduated etc.
Hopefully they'll put dates on next year's ones.

On the other hand - I got student discount in the omni yestereve with my ****ty new ID card :P

I think it just depends on who you're dealing with I was in edinburgh a couple weeks ago and used my card whenever my gf bought anythign for herself and they gave the discount without issue.
Obviously in your case she just wanted to be a pain. I'd say the expiration date thing might be a problem for a little while and afterwards businesses in galway at least will see its normal. In tralee you'll just have to tell her to get the manager or something to show you're serious.

Ya I think you're right, she was just an old hag really, and it only saves you 50c which is pointless! I guess I'm just worried I'll have the same problem other places in future. Was there never expiry dates on them or something?

the old ones had the year they were valid printed on them so yeah they had an expiry. Its mad that the new ones don't...reckon there'll be a good few more places rejecting them over time since there'll be no proof that whoever's using them is still a student.

    Is it not 2.50?

Anyway, if it's going to bother you, I'd suggest complaining to, say, Admissions. If enough people do then someone might cop on and do something about it.
There were expiry dates on them before, or at least the date of the beginning of the term.
    They'll change back eventually.

But she's not an "old hag" just because she thought you were trying to pull a fast one..

If your student card is rejected, it's handy to be able to whip out the student travel card or an international student ID card.

What sort of absolute jobsworth actually cares about the ID you show them for a discount anyway?

The reason I said she was a hag was because she said it was a fake, maybe calling her a hag is over the top but it is annoying to be accused of something I would never do. If my boyfriend wasn't so "just leave it" I would have called the manager to exlain my case, she was out of order to suggest I made the card myself. I just sent off my travel card application form Friday so that will do in future but I'll still pop into admissions tomorrow because it is a disgrace to be treated like I was for something I have no control over......

Where is it 2.50 by the way? In tralee it was 7.50 i think and 8 for an adult.

A friend of mine is fairly high up in the Irish Independent - would you like me to ask him to run a cover story on it for you?

    2.50 difference in galway omniplex. 9 for an adult - 6.50 for a student = 2.50.

This happened to me in the Omniplex in Tralee as well! It must have been the same person. I always use my student travel card at the cinema, I've used it in Cork an Galway many times. It's more "official", it's good enough for Bus Eireann and Iarnrod Eireann so you'd assume it'd be good enough for a cinema in Tralee... But no!

I thought it was a disgrace to be honest. When I produced the card she said it was "only for travelling". What? So we're supposed to have a separate card for every activity now?! She was quite rude about it as well, I can see why you described her as a hag. You'd think that with how much cinemas are being hit by illegal downloading and piracy they would treat their customers better. I know I for one won't be returning to the Omniplex in Tralee. Congratulations, you gained 2.50 but lost a customer.

I like the way she said it was "only for travelling" although you can clearly get discounts in Topshop, Boots, McDonalds etc, as it states on the back of the card.

Yeah it clearly shows on the back that its valid for all sorts of discounts, she sounds like a right crank tbh.

That would actually be fantastic, I was going to contact a radio station but the newspaper would be really good. I just think the whole thing should be highlighted, they might change their tune. And I think i'll be going to the galway omniplex in future! ;)

Ya she mentioned that travel cards aren't accepted either! And she was extremely rude to me also, must be the same woman! You only save 50c anyway which is pointless, I can't believe you save 2.50 in Galway!

It never ceases to amaze me how stupid and/or ignorant some ppl can be. Gone are the days of friendly and polite customer service. (from most places anyway.)

I work in the Galway Omniplex and we always try to give as much leeway as possible with student cards, if people don't have them with them we'll still give a discount nine times out of ten. Remember to always ask before you hand over the cash though, there's not a lot we can do if the sale has already been put through and then the customer says they are a student!

I went to registration today and they said they are expecting alot of these stories but why did they change the cards so?

I'm going to the eye cinema later (€4 before 8.30 pm for college students and €4 for a regular popcorn and drink ;)) so i'll see what happens there......
