I would recommend staying in Bukit Bintang. Cleaner and a lot more livelier than Chinatown, which is a bit of a dump.

Get the bus (9Rm/€1.80) from just oustiside the entrance to Lcct to Sentral Station (you can get the regular bus or the Air Asia bus, both are cheap, every half hour). Then, when you get off that bus, ask the boys who work for the buses where to get the Monorail. It's a 2 minute walk from Sentral Station but you wouldn't see it unless it was pointed out to you.

Get the Monorail from there to Bukit Bintang. 10/15 mins and about 50c.

I can't recommend a particular place to stay as the place I stayed was owned by a bitch who pissed me off. It's new and you could get it for about 10 euro a night. If you're only there for a night or 2 I can show you on a map where it is.

The main thing to do is see the Petronas Towers. They are withing walking distance from Bukit Bintang so that's another reason to stay there. Make sure you see them at night, from the outside. If you want to go up them, get there early, i.e. before 9am. They have a set amount of tickets each day and they usually sell out before 10ish so be there as early as possible.

Also, a street in Bukit Bintang turns into a line of outdoor restaurants at night where you can get fairly cheap meals. Ask in a few of them what's the best deal they can do. The street is called Jalan Alor, which is parallel to Jalan Bukit Bintang, the main street in BB. There is also a huge shopping centre within walking distance of Jalan Bukit Bintang called The Pavillion. Worth a look and the cinema is really cheap. Ticket and munchies should cost about 5 euro altogether. And it's open late every night. The cinema will come in handy as drinking in Malaysia is very expensive so you won't be out every night unless you have a lot of money.

Accommodation is cheaper in Chinatown. I also stayed down there in a place called Matahari Lodge. That was 7.50 a night for basically 4 walls and a bed but it was clean and the staff were friendly.

But Chinatown is away from everything. I'd highly recommend staying in Bukit Bintang. Neon lights, looking at the monorail (I'm a child when it comes to stuff like that, looks cool as it flys over the street). If you like Indian, there are a couple of cheap places on the main bit.

That's all I can think of.

Stayed in both of these places last year, can recommend them both:

both in BB, they are just around the corner from each other and right next to the 'food street' mentioned above.
