UPC Set top box connections

    Hi,

We are thinking of moving to UPC from Sky/Vodafone for the full TV/broadband/phone package (€85 a month package: http://www.upc.ie/deals/new_customers/fibreultimate/) and was wondering what connections the set top box would have? I currently have an older Sky+ 160gb box with 2 scart connections (one is used for tv and the other for a wireless a/v sender) and it works out fine.

I presume the upc box would have at least 1 HDMI and 1 SCART connection? if so this would probably work fine, so I could continue to have tv in the living room as well as having the wireless sender send the signal upstairs.

Also I'm wondering how the service is in general? I know it's not as good as sky with less channels and a poorer EPG. We're moving mainly because of the faster broadband for the same price but TV is still important.

    Thanks

It depends on which box you get. Only the HD box has HDMI and from what I can gather you can only use HDMI or Scart, but not both at the same time, so it makes using something like a wireless sender difficult.

The service is okay. The equipment and EPG are quite poor (in the case of the EPG its bloody awful) and the lack of HD channels is annoying, but for the most part its grand. Id prefer Sky for TV tho tbh.

UPC broadband on the other hand is simply awesome; streets ahead of any others in this country.

    Thanks for the reply.

Hmmm. I can certainly put up with the poor hardware/software as I don't watch a whole lot of tv but the wireless sender would be an issue. Currently using it on the sky+ box with it streaming upstairs and it works a charm. Would this definitly not work so?

Am I right in assuming that you must be recieving some sort of TV package with UPC to be able to get phone and internet with them? Also would regular non-HD channels look better due to the fact the box is using HDMI instead of a SCART connection?

I think there is a way to get a wireless streaming system working, but to be honest Ive not tried it so Im not sure how to go about it. I think there was a thread on this forum about it not so long ago so it might be worth having a search for that and see if it has some useful information.

You dont need to get TV to get the broadband (nor the phone as far as I know). I think they charge something like €7.25 a month extra for broadband if youre not a TV subscriber.

I dont think there is a lot of difference on the SD between HDMI and Scart tbh. They might look a bit better using HDMI but on both of my LCD TVs (one is a 42" Bravia and the other a 22" Samsung monitor/TV) the SD channels look pretty rough regardless. How much of it is down to the UPC box or how much is down to how bad SD generally looks on a HDTV Im not sure.
