I'm trying to decide whether to upgrade my touch to iPhone4, but was wondering if I could by it from Apple and use it as an iPod until I can sort out the most cost effective way to run the phone. So will the iPhone work as an iPod Touch without a sim card?
    Thanks

You need to activate it with a SIM before you can use it. Once you activate I THINK it becomes locked to that network, but I can't be sure, may have dreamt that...

If you buy a sim free one it will ya, you might have to activate it im not sure but its no big deal just get a free ready to go microsim and do it. It doesn't become locked to the network if it's a factory unlocked phone from apple.

As far as I know the phones that come from apple are unlocked so you can use any sim on the iPhone

The problem is, i think, i could be wrong, everytime you stick in a new sim, you have to repeat the process of syncing iTunes from computer/USB which could cause problems!

Buy it. Get a ready to go micro sim from any network and put it in, you must do this to activate it. After that, your fine.

I've used 3 different networks on my iPhone and it's fine.

To use it on that network, you have to resync with iTunes (it downloads the particular carrier settings for the sim).
