Growing upas an only child I was very close to two of my cousins, we went on some great holidays and family events with them. My dad always worried that I had no brothers and sisters and said it was great that I had them. Dad passed away four years ago and neither of them really spoke to me at the funeral which upset me but I got over it. I suppose they are very different to me now. I am friendly to everyone and very down to earth whereas they have done extremly well and are far more pretentious. Anway at the funeral the other day I sympathised with the girl and said we must have a chat later but she never came near me all day so I ended up leaving the hotel early. I know I'm being stupid and reading into this but my dd would have loved us to be close. Now that my uncle is gone there is little hope of any further communication. <snip>

Not very many people are in my experience. All I have in common with my cousins is the fact that our parents are related. Even though a lot of them are quite close in age I'd never socialise with them or even talk to them outside of family events. The moment the parental connection is severed like your father a lot of people wouldn't really have a reason to see their cousins any more. Just my take on it really.

I'm close to most of my cousins on my Mum's side, even though we live in different countries (Hurrah for Facebook!).

My father's side I know nothing about at all...

I'm not close to my cousins at all. There may be one that I'd get on with more than the others, but we'd never meet for pints or anything. For the record I have 8 cousins on my dads side, 2 on my mothers (never even met them)

I am sorry to hear OP, but it does seem to be the norm for my friends too, to have very little contact with their cousins.

flahers, Personal Issues is not a forum for asking others about their personal lives, it's for requesting advice for an issue of your own...have you a question about your particular issue you wish to put to other posters?

I have a couple of cousins (about 5-6) that I'd be very close with,we were raised together and live nearby. But I know when our Granny and parents eventually pass away we may not be end up as close. It's life,I'm not all that close to my primary school best friend.

OP, I was very close to cousins when we were young, then for a few years around secondary school and college we all drifted apart. However, as we started meeting up again at family weddings, etc in recent years, some of us have started to become close again. We even make an effort to have at least one weekend away together a year.
I never missed them when they weren't around but I would hate to lose contact with them again

    Hi op
I've said a load of times, there's more to life than family! If you wouldn't get on well with a person who wasn't related, don't try to force things just because they're family. It can cause you a lot of stress.
I have some cousins who I'm so close to I would consider them my brothers and sisters. Others, I rarely see but I've no problem with that.
At the end of the day, it's nice to have a blood link with friends but it's not essential
