What Applications do you use? - Mac Book

Just wondering what apps people use.

I have - Skype, Aperture, and the normal ones you get with it.


If you could suggest a few useful one and a brief description that would be cool. Thanks

I'm tempted by 1password but does it just store your passwords or change them? Also what happens if more than one user uses the same laptop?

Lifehacker have a pretty good list from which i'd have a fair portion of the apps.

Also of note is the excellent TextMate, and Tweetie (but neither are free)

I highly recommend 1password - I was a bit skeptical at first, but tried out the trial and knew after a couple of days it was going to be worth the money. It doesn't change your passwords, but it does include a random password generator so you can create if want to easily create new ones.

The basic idea is that you shouldn't use the same password for more than one website service, as a compromise in one site could expose your password to other accounts.

It basically, keeps track of all your accounts and encrypts all the information with one master password. Whenever you visit a site, you just hit the 1password button and it will prompt you for your master password and if correct, will fill in the form for the site in question with the appropriate details and log you in. You can set a timeout, so you won't be prompted for the master if you use it again in the next X number of minutes.

It can also store other info such as credit card details if you wish, and you can fill those in with a couple of clicks when needed.

I use four different Macs depending and have it set to sync up via dropbox - so all my machines stay in sync.

The one thing to remember is that you must use a fairly strong master password, as if someone gets hold of your account database and knows this password, then they could decrypt all your logins. I use a fairly cryptic string of characters for mine, but since it's pretty much the only password I need, it's easy to remember.

As regards multiple users, that should work, but do note that the license is per user, thus a single user using multiple machines requires only a single license, but I think two users on the one machine will require two licenses - or the family license if that's applicable.

I'd also recommend 1Password. It takes a bit learning but if you take full advantage of it you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. There's also an app for iPhone and iPad which will sync to Dropbox.

+1 for One Password. I've got the desktop version, not the iPhone version, and it saves met lots of time. Does anyone find that the Boards login link for 1Password doesn't work? (1Password has a feature where you can drag and drop links to sites onto the book marks bar and after clicking on the link it will take you to the site and automatically log you in).

are there any good old style Game apps available for mac, as sad as it sounds i am missing my windows games, solitaire hearts...etc i have the minesweeper (Another Mine) app and it is exactly what im looking for in the other games too!

im just having problems finding good games apps on the apple site between the demo's and sharewares!

I use OpenOffice for documents (yay open source) and it's easier for working across multiple platforms- my laptop is MAC, my netbook and home desktop are linux and my work computer is a pc. I find it's just easier to use openoffice across all of them.

Dropbox is fantastic, a great syncing service if you work across a few different computers.

Growl for notifications is great.

PitchPerfect for tuning my ukulele (random, but free and handy for tuning string instruments)

Handbrake for encoding movies, or iSquint if it's proving tricky.

Comic Lover for reading comics

VLC for watching WMAs

OmniDiskSweeper for managing my HDD usage

The Gimp & Picassa for photo managing & editing
