Read a tonne of problems and solutions online on how to sort out the no sound problem, can't see to get it sorted. Laptop is a Acer Aspire 5536 with Windows 7, tried changing the sound settings from speakers to default output. Any suggestions?

    Anyone?

When i connect lappie to monitor i have to plug a separate audio cable from headphone socket to audio in on the monitor. I think this is because the monitor is DVI, shipped with a DVI to HDMI cable which allows HDMI input but as it's actually DVI, it doesn't carry sound. This has to be carried by another cable.
Could you get some speakers and plug them into the headphone jack so that you actually get some sound?

When the hdmi lead is connected, check if there is another sound output device listed and change the audio output to that.

Tried both of the above, with try again tomorrow and see if we have any luck.

When you have the HDMI lead connected the "Realtek HDMI Output" should be available (Turn from red to green icon).

If it does you should be able to select it.

If it doesn't try a different HDMI Lead. Call out to a friends house and try it on their TV / HDMI.

If it works test it with your HDMI on their TV.

Tried everything, different TV, different HDMI cable, updated all the drivers from Acers website, etc... but still nothing.

Got it in the end thanks to my mate, you put the computer to "Sleep" then plug in the HDMI. The go to the sound menu and you can select the HDMI Audio Output.:D

    Hi

I've got the same problem with my Sony Vaio. I can get the full screen, but not sound. So, following Gavin "shel" suggestion, I put the PC to sleep and plugged in the HDMI. I've tested the setting and I can get sound through the speakers OK. But when I went to watch something on YouTube, the same thing. No sound!!

I can throw up a screenshot later, but does anyone have any suggestions?

    TIA :)

I've run into this exact same problem. I have been hooking up my acer 5738G laptop to the TV via hdmi for 6 months now - without any issue whatsoever.

Now, when I do so, visual is fine but it remains with sound via laptop - I can't get it to switch over.

When I check out the sound settings here =>

...I can't find any option to switch to "hdmi output" - there are no other 'output' settings available (i'm certain of that - as ive been through it a 1000 times).

    Can anybody help?

Have you tried reinstalling/updating the audio drivers?

Funny one this, but what browser are you using? As above, I could get full screen, but no sound. Switched to Firefox and it worked perfectly! Seems to act up with Chrome.

could be your plugging the cable into the hdmi out port on the telly. (the one that goes to an amp). Is there another hdmi port on the telly?

I had been using this hdmi cable successfully for 6 months. It's been plugged in - on the tv end to the very same hdmi port (one of four regular hdmi input ports).

Nevertheless, thanks for the suggestion - and keep them coming if you can (as I'm all out of ideas!).

Happens me all the time since i updated my machine to windows 8. but do you get sound from your laptop speakers?

What works for me is start playing the video then take the cable out of the laptop then put it back in and the sound comes through the tv. Hope it helps as it works for me

go down to dealz and buy a new hdmi cable for 1.50.
Your previous snapshot says its not plugged in, so swap the cable and see what happens

Yes, I get sound - but tonight, watching on the big screen - and straining to hear bits of it from the laptop speakers..it's far from ideal.

No - tried that numerous times - no joy (although I do remember that sorting it when it happened a few times in the past).

This might work for you. Before starting video player or connecting cable to TV, disable the laptop speakers in control panel, device manager. Will force PC to use TV speakers. Re-enable after.

Thanks - will try that and report back with the outcome.

also, you have speakers set as default device, that means that sound will only come from the speakers. Right click on the device you want to set as default, and click that

Apologies for coming back so late. Got busy with other things.

I just tried it (had not had a need to hook laptop up to tv since) - disabled audio via device manager - then with the cable hooked up, re-enabled audio - and working fine.

Thanks for your help - much appreciated.
