iPhone 4 - Long Texts been Sent and charged??

I have noticed a few times over the past few weeks , sometimes when iam sending a text message just as iam about the press send, my IPhone freezes on the text sending,
i.e the "send" button is unresponsive
it takes a very long time to unfreeze the "send" button (nothing else freezes on the fone)
i have found if i press return twice after the end of the text message , the message sends but doesn't usually arrive to the receiver till next day or sometimes next week!!
sometimes with or without the message also with "unreadable text"

I have now found out that iam getting charged for these text messages as "long text"...
I don't send many text messages and it is NEVER long....
Plus on average i only send about 50 a month out of my 300 allowance, these long texts are charged at 20c also................anyone else?

i have posted the above on the vodafone support forum and their reply was to
do a back up and restore , and failing that bring it to one of their stores and have one of their engineers have a look..

Good enough advice i suppose , but the fone otherwise is working 100%, it has been jailbroken by jailbreakme.com ...

You're sure they're not being sent as MMS?

When the failed messages arrive they do
Look like they are a mms message
In my settings on my iPhone under messages there is an option for mms on/off
I have turned it off and will if this resolves this
It not every text message that this happens on
Just about 1 in 20 or so

Possibly you are replying to an MMS and not switching type to SMS or else you are filling in the subject line which automatically then pegs it as an MMS.

Now that I have mms messaging turned off in settings
There is no longer the camera icon to
the left of the enter text field!
This icon was to send or take
Pic or select a photo from my fone I assume?

How do u switch type before sending text
Other than going into settings that is?

Ordinarily, the iPhone will default to sending as an SMS unless you attach a photo. However, in the same settings screen there is also an option for a Subject line. If this is on and you have been typing your message in there the message will be sent as an MMS as SMS messages don't support subjects.

Mms/ on
Subject field / off

I have mms off from tonite so I won't know if this is my prob until I send a few texts over the next few days
