Unemployment - how do people deal?

    Hi everyone

Just looking for a bit of advice...my situation is probably a bit different to most people's, as in my unemployment is self inflicted.

I recently left a great job back home to do the travelling thing. I have recently moved to a different city on the other side of the world in the hope of new experiences, adventure and whatnot, combined with hopefully getting work in my field. I'd saved a bit so the money situation isn't crucial, (although it won't last forever...) but I'm ambitious and while I left a good job, I came here to work, to have something valuable to put on my CV and that is my priority.

However, I'm overseas a month and the job hunt is terrifying. My field is an incredibly competitive one, probably the ultimate competitive industry, and while I have ample experience back home, my lack of experience here seems to be hindering everything. I've no doubt that I'll get there, eventually, and get a lucky break...but this could be months down the line.

In the meantime I'm doing work experience a few days a week, but dealing with the issue of having no schedule, no routine and very little to do on the days in between. I'm so unused to not being busy and I've fallen into a rut of going to bed really late, waking up in the afternoon and staying in the apartment and online all day. It's soul destroying. If it carries on for much longer I feel as though I'll become depressed!

So I guess I'm just looking for advice and suggestions. I have a few things I'd love to do and in theory thought the few weeks of 'down time' would be a good chance to start on them...I'd love to start jogging every day, I'd love to catch up on my reading, start taking a class or two....but I seem to lack the motivation to get going on any of them.

Have any of you managed to get out of a rut while unemployed and established a healthy routine for yourself? Any advice is really appreciated!

My unemployment is self inflicted too. Im in another country trying to write a thesis.

Even with something to do each day..ie the thesis. Ive not managed to get in a normal routine after 1 year. Same thing, go to bed late, wake up midday etc. However, I just accept this is my routine. I closed my facebook as I think that is the main killer if you have too much time on your hands. Its easy to waste hours on it, so that had to go. I have tried going to bed early, but I find Im not tired enough (as i dont do much during the day) and end up waking at 2am in the morning and then crashing again at 6am. So I accept the 1am bed time is just what suits my body.

Yeah join some groups to at least have something regular to attend. I do badminton and language exchange. I found these groups on meetup.com and the country im in had its own version of meetup.com

All I can really say is that you will get a proper routine when you do find a real job. I used to have no problem getting up at 7am when I did work...but like I said, cant get up earlier then 11.30am these days.

Just stick with it, you seem to be doing work experience which is good.
